Our company offered a relocation package, but only if you could go quickly. You had to be 'New Zealand ready' to get it. As we hadn't sorted out visas yet, we got nowt. It was a bit annoying, but there you go. This after they'd paid a team of people to travel first-class to England to attend the expos. Talk about your false economies. NZ companies don't seem to quite get that they need us more than we need them yet.

OH got NZ$5k towards relocation from the company he finally ended up with but I think it was only because he asked the recruitment agent to push for it. If I remember rightly it helped that he had two other job offers!

Some companies/industries are better than others at offering relocation packages but I don't think its the norm. I'd certainly say it wouldn't hurt to ask 'cause if you don't ask, you won't get as my mother always says! :D

We got our tickets, all of the visa costs, 1 month accomodation, one month car rental, and half of the removal costs. All this on the condition that you work at least a year for them. Not a bad deal!

OH waited until they had put job offer in writing, and then contacted them and asked what sort of relocation help they could offer while he considered whether to accept job offer or not. Basically once they had decided they wanted him and had gone to the effort of sorting out the paperwork it would have been more expense for them if he has declined offer so they offered a good relocation package.....but it seems here that if you don't ask, you won't get. I would also wait until you get an agreed salary first too before asking, otherwise you could end up getting offered a lower salary to compensate for relocation costs.

By all means ask. I have found if you don't ask they will not offer but they will barter with you if they want you bad enough.

In regard to the health sector, I have been told its fairly common to offer the cost of the flights (2kNZD) and initial accommodation (2 weeks for me).

This is obviously just for me as a single person.

From what I've read, the IT guys get much better deals.

i got 4 weeks rental, my flight and a hire car for two weeks. Not as much as some people as i still had to do all the visa stuff, pay to move and sort out other flights for my family. still not complaining though as some people didnt get that!!

Blimey, some good deals there... especially Nienke's  :)

Reckon if you can get flights alone you're doing well... think I'll mention it to OH to push with nursing agency.

Hi Red Devil,

I thought i'd ask about relocation deals as when we go to NZ around November our finances will be a bit low:wah
OH is IT so hopefully when he goes out for a 2 week reccie job hunting in Auckland and Wellington hopefully he will get at least a couple of offers if so i'd like to ask for relocation deal as anything will help save us some cash:D
I have found that everyone has given us good advice and tips so thank you to everyone who replied.

Sounds like my OH has got himself a great relocation package after reading some of the other posts on here.

$8.000 in cash, plus a vehicle provided by the Company, private use included and all petrol for both work and private use paid for. Private Medical Insurance for both of us as soon as we land. All his work clothing included. Company is also paying the bond and the first 6 weeks house rental. They are paying OH salary from June 30th, but he doesn't have to start until July 7th, to give us time to settle in. Picking us up at the airport and they also have someone looking for a place for us to rent before we arrive.

I reckon he's one lucky person to get all that and his salary isn't too bad either!

2 weeks before we fly out, can't wait.

We also consider ourselves very fortunate - we had air fares for 3 - hired vehicle for 2 weeks - two nights accommodation on arrival - then paid for accommodation in 5 Star Motel after our flat had been flooded out - and all costs for shipping - so guess we spoilt. OH is Elect Engineer and not IT.

Couldn't agree more with this advice.

One additional thing to bear in mind, if you are willing to spend a bit of time in discussions with your prospective employer, is that there are likely to be some changes introduced in the next month or so which clarify the tax treatment of relocation payments by the IRD in NZ.

Although the rules are still to be finalised, I understand that it will clarify that genuine relocation payments will be tax free (the IRD has until now been a bit inconsistent about this). The new rules will also clarify what can and can't be counted as relocation costs.

Depending on what the rules say, even if your new employer is unable to make you an extra payment to cover relocation costs, you might still be able to agree a tax efficient arrangement with them. By way of example only, you could agree to receive a slightly lower salary in the first year (which will be taxed) in return for your permitted relocation costs being reimubrsed (which may not be taxed).

There are likely to be pros and cons to an arrangement such as this, so if in any doubt, it's definitely worth seeking some independent legal advice before agreeing anything (you could ask the employer to pay for this too ;)).

Link below contains some more information from the IRD on this:

My husband has been offered a job in the police and the relocation package is......ZERO. we pay for everything, the feel offering him a job is bonus enough. Possibly we get a weeks accommodation i think..

We were also offered ZERO after asking/haggling. But my total package is quite a bit higher than they wanted to offer, so I guess that's a bonus in the long run. I also work in IT.

However, even though the visa application is being "fast tracked" INZ style, it is taking MUCH longer than anticpated so I have been unemployed for longer than I really needed to be which is pushing up our total moving costs to about £19k. :wah and with the delays, the flight costs keep going up......

... blimey, how many times are you planning to go round the globe? ;) :D

On a serious note, are there any nurses that have managed to get a relocation package? Reckon we'll push with Christchurch... afterall, nothing ventured, nothing gained :D

Not in nursing, I'm an x-ray tech, and this is how my relocation package worked out. It's with one of the district health boards in Auckland. $5K that can be put towards one-way ticket, up to 4 weeks motel accomodation, up to 4 weeks rental of vehicle, shipping.

I tried to get something, anything but nope, nothing. Can apply for a teacher's relocation 'grant' of $4000 once there, which is nice but doesn't do much for a family of 5!

Also still waiting for news from Immigration having submitted ITA just after you......wonder why, when we've job offers, it's taking so long?

Sorry to hijack the thread a little: Carey - have you been offered the teaching job? If so, how long are they prepared to wait until you start? Any difficulties being offered the job from the UK? I'd really appreciate some extra info on this as nothing much seems to be posted on the logistics of transferring in teaching, especially with term times, etc.

Yes offered a job as a provisionally registered teacher in Early Childhood, (applied for mnay primary jobs directly and thro' agencies but no joy), the timing is difficult for schools as 4 terms in NZ means you can't give 1/2 a terms notice here, no easy way round this, unless you resign and hope to get something. My job is waiting, still, since March and still no agreed start date as we are still waiting for news from NZIS. Ask away for anything else!

Thanks for that Carey. I'm beginning to think along the lines of getting a job for October term next year and then having a slightly extended 'summer' holiday while we move and get settled. Either that or move over at the end of the Christmas term. Can we wait that long?

Did you manage to get your job directly through Ed Gazette?

Actually sent CV on spec. for my job and then saw it advertised afterwards.

I read this thread with interest as I wasn't sure how our package compared. DH received offer of 4 weeks accomodation, 2 weeks rental car, I BELIEVE they will take care of the costs of his paperwork and up to $15k for relocation costs to include air fare, shipping, etc. Or maybe the $15k needs to include the cost of the paperwork. Hmm, best be looking through the contract again, I guess.

Can i ask how are people getting jobs before they go - we know we will be there begining of Jan. I could for teaching but my husband keeps being told he has to be in the country for electronics engineering jobs. We would prefer him to get the job first as we have small children and i might look for part time near his work - there are schools everywhere.

He has a first class degree and several years work experience and in his current role is very flexible , he gets them out of all sorts of scraps, i dont know what they will do without him, he keeps being promoted and his old job not replaced so he has become jack of all trades money is coming in handy though . Must add he has a good sense of humour and gets on with everyone . (put that in incase anyone wants to offer him a job)??? :D

We just assumed apart from money i can claim once i start teaching ,that we would be paying for everything ourselves! As we cant sell the house every penny will count!:cheers

Any advice very welcome?

Hi thewoodie, we keep getting told that OH should be in NZ for interviews ect, so our plans are for OH to go out for the last 2 weeks in August agencie have been in touch with him and agree that the best thing is a couple of weeks reccie. Its an expence we could be doing without, but if its the only way to help and let employees know that we are serious about comming to NZ.
Good luck with the process and job hunting
