Going for Blood Tests later this week, and don't mind admitting i am terrified, i am extremely needle-phobic especially when there taking blood out. To the point doctors in UK wanted to do blood tests on my once or twice and i refused! (yes even where my healths concerned i will refuse). I have even genuinely considered (and still am as i type this) not bothering with the blood tests and getting a plane home and forgetting a life in NZ JUST to avoid any needles, in fact if truth be known i have left my medicals until so late (11mths into being in NZ) because i terrified of going through with them.
SO, anyone make me feel better? And please no simple "its only a needle and a few minutes", That doesnt really work with a phobia, i know its irrational, i know its stupid, but try telling my mind that as i have already started loosing sleep this week worrying about it.
I also need the extra tests for high BMI (lipids and glucose i think) so can someone explain what's involved please, i have never had any blood tests in my life, and really don't want any surprises, so give me the gory details..
Anyone lend me some blood for a test? LOL

I've passed out many a times giving blood.
I make them lay me down, I cover my eyes, and I start a conversation about anything else that I can think of to keep my mind off of it.

I know just how you feel Lee. I'm the same. I recommend what dilanium says. Tell them you hate needles and tell them you want them to do everything possible to distract you and keep you talking about other things. They're used to people like us and they should help.

I have a dental drill phobia and pay £250 for fillings cos I get an iv pass out injection which as an afterthought doesn't really help you I guess! but before I had iv I used to get diazepam from my gp which makes you not care and be ambivalent. you could ask if its ok to be under the influence? you need the while day off work and can't drive or drink alcohol. hope this helps a bit. I empathize due to my dentist fear and know that a few "there there"a dont make a blind bit of difference

They only take one lot of blood which covers the lipids and glucose so not two lots which is a blessing in your case but you must fast for at least 12 hours before they take it. concentrate on the food you want to have after the event. create a treat in your mind and have it waiting for you when you leave the clinic.
Look away when they are ready to put the needle in and think about something totally different.........desert island, sunshine, sea, a pint of good beer, a large steak, your favourite subject. It literally takes just a few seconds and then its over.
I didnt even see the needle its not a big syringe and large needle anymore they are more uptodate. good luck :nice1

Lee, you can get some cream called emla, my nurse friend was telling me about it last night... pop it on 30 mins beforehand, and you dont feel a thing, they use it on kids apparently when taking blood from them.
I just look away once they start going near my arm... they only put in one needle and then they pop little vials in and out of the needle holder depending on how many blood tests you need, you hear a little "pop" as they change them over and thats it.... one prick and you are done! :)

It will just be one needle Lee and then they take the samples they need. I would advise against taking any kind of drug unfortunately they may skew test results and same with alcohol. I don't do very well with needles or blood and blood stuff tis OH job so goes down well with his colleagues!! Have you got someone who could go along with you and chat to you to try and keep your occupied? Or maybe try ipod and loud music to block out what's happening?
All the very best with it Lee

I also pass out with needles, imagine how hard it was for me when I had to do all the pregnancy tests only to find out I had gestational diabetes and had to have more needles?!
I have to wholeheartedly agree with dilanium, ask to lie down while having it done, in fact mention it when you phone up to book the appointment, so they are ready for you.
If you can, go to a place where they always take blood, as they are so much better and will only need to do it once. As you've probably realised from all your replies there are many of us needle phobic people out there, so they will be use to dealing with it.
I stare at a point on a wall, or think hard about something, they often try to talk to you to distract you, (as if you don't know whats about to happen!), but if you prefer them to be quiet, just tell them! I also tend to tense the hand of the other arm as much as I can, as putting all your effort into squeezing that hand can distract you. (sometimes I dig my nail in a bit also!)
Make your appointment for first thing in the morning, so you're still a bit sleepy and have less time to work yourself up into a state.
Also take sugar water or a doughnut for afterwards, this works well to get you back to feeling normal.
Lastly promise yourself a big treat for getting through it! :D
Good Luck!
Cheers

I used to be no problem with blood tests till one day, nurse lost control of stopping bleeding after one blood test and she did panic made me panic:mad: . Since then, I was terrified of blood tests till I learnt to control myself and watch blood tests again, got there in the end without any problem.

For the extra tests, there is nothing extra for you to do apart from fasting before the test, they just take additional blood and test it.
Definitely book the test first thing in the morning so that you can just fast overnight whilst you sleep.
If it makes any difference, I can tell you that giving blood for tests in NZ is much better than the equivalent experience in the UK.

Can't really help as it doesn't bother me. I have a weird habit of passing out in hospitals, no idea why, but needles don't bother me much.
Only advice I can offer is think about what an idiot you would feel if you abandoned a life you are clearly enjoying for the sake of one needle and a couple of minutes of terror (OK, maybe more than a few minutes, as it has already started). The embarrassment of explaining to old mates in the pub back home surely is a worse thought, no?
Come on big fella, you can do it, we're all rooting for you. Remember when we had a virtual group hug for your finances. well I'm sure we can all manage another for you again. Don't let us down Lee, we believe in you.

Could you take someone with you? If you have someone with you then you have A) moral support on hand and B) are less likely to run for the hills once in the place as you won't want to lose face in front of a friend.

12th May 2008, 12:26 PM
I'd say definitely warn the place you are going to so that they are prepared for you. Ask to lie down. Take somebody along for moral support, somebody who can calmer reassure you and remind you why you need to go through what will be a horrible experience for you. Fast for 12 hours before hand and only have water on the morning of your medical just be certain you don't sqew the results. Plan a treat/reward for after and allow yourself some time sitting in the waiting room to calm down again before driving away. Distraction is a great idea, either chatting to the person doing the test or asking them to be quiet and focussing very hard on staying in NZ.
I agree with BBB don't give up on your dream and let your phobia win! We can all tell how much you love being in NZ so I really, really hope you can do this to make your dream come true.
All the best, good luck!

Elma is great it numbs the area so you won't feel it. Pulling your stomach muscles in as tight as you can manage and counting to 5 helps stop you passing out, (keeps the blood at the top of your body and counting helps force you to breath).
All of this is fine for the physical effects but for the mental side of it I'm afraid I can only suggest you imagine the coldest drizzly day stuck in miles of traffic on the M25 just to get to work, (or what ever your own UK nightmare might be) and promise yourself a NZ treat afterwards.
Good luck. Debbie

Thanks all, not sure i feel better or worse now.. All this talk of passing out and popping sounds make me feel bad now... Oh man........
Why does something so tiny and silly terrify?
holland
12th May 2008, 03:51 PM
Hey Lee...
Fears are irrational so they are unexplainable, and what one person thinks is terrifying is a walk in the park to others...
2 years ago I was involved in a serious car accident and couldnt leave the house...I had panic attack after panic attack just hearing noises...this could be the phone ringing...a cup being placed on the floor...anything. I could hear cars passing the house outside and I would have a panic attack....I would shake, and I looked and was a shadow of my former self...The thought of EVER going near a car again, never mind driving one made me physically ill.I couldnt work, when I slept I woke up screaming...horrific...I was diagnosed with ptsd.
TODAY, I am on the other side of the world, working full time, driving is part of my job and I am enjoying life...
What is the answer I hear you say???Well....firstly, I wanted 'me' back ( as did my hubby!!)...just like you want to stay in NZ...so that is a HUGE driving force. Secondly, I stopped saying 'I have panic attacks when I leave the house....I will have a panic attack if I hear a car'.....I didn't know what was going to happen in the future...nobody does....I changed my thinking to 'I don't know how I am going to feel when I get in the car as I am not in it yet!!'.....
Ok...I am going on.....but the best advice my 4th counsellor:D gave me was 'if you change the way you think, you change the way you feel'.
Having an injection is going to happen...if you worry about it for 5 hours or 5 days the end result is going to be the same....worrying is a pointless emotion as it never changes the end result...just makes the journey there more stressful...THAT SAID....it is difficult not to worry.
I suppose what I am trying to say is....you CAN and WILL do this....
Use distraction and remember...you cant predict how you are going to feel having 'this' injection as you havent had it yet!!!
OK, now I really do sound like Im your mother:laugh

Hi lee,
just wanted to confirm what the others have said. I'm not a fan of blood tests, but being pregnant, have to have them fairly regularly and like many things, the more often you do them, the easier they get/less daunting.
for me personally, - I look away, and tell them I'm a nervous patient.. and they invariably talk to me about something completely random to distract me, and a few seconds and its over. the mental anticipation is worse than the reality!
best of luck - think about something nice to do as a reward afterwards!

I wasn't keen, though I don't have a phobia.
I would definitely recommend starting a conversation with the nurse before you've even sat/lay down. Just keep it flowing (they will probably be good at this). Talk about things you like, nice places you've been and it will take your attention away from the needle. Also, look away throughout the procedure.
What does it feel like? The only thing you feel is a little scratch then nothing else. You don't even notice when they've taken it out.

I have had loads of blood tests over the years but I can honestly say the one I had here a few weeks ago for my ITA new medical was the least painful. I honestly didn't feel a thing.
I always look away and concentrate hard on something in the room and talk a load of rubbish to the nurses but this time she said it was all over before I even had a chance to start yakking!

Lee, don't feel bad. I pass out because of my fear. Because I "know" I will pass out.
I have no problem handling blood, or assisting a blood draw from an animal, but if someone comes with a needle meant for me I freak out.
You need to do this to stay in NZ. So you will do it. Just relax, use the tips above and get it over with!
Also they reccommend not drinking alcohol for a few days prior to the blood tests as well as the fasting.

Had mine done earlier this week. I used to get a bit hysterical at the mere thought, but 'rescue remedy'; part of the Bach flower remedy range (holland and Barratt stock it) is brilliant at helping. I've used it for years as it's the only thing that enables me to get on a plane. My Mum was mega-phobic about dentists until she was introduced to it about 20 years ago..... she still hates it, but can get herself there and back alone when she uses it. Great for pre-interview nerves too - no noticeable effect at all except afterwards you realise that you dealt with your dreaded experience much better than you could have hoped for......miracle stuff, really!:yes

Slight update as PM's been asking.
Honestly..... I am struggling to find any courage to go through with Blood Tests :wah I saw the hypnotherapist lady last Friday, all went well it felt ok, i left feeling more confident. But 2 sleepless nights (yup i havent slept in 48hours) later i really not sure i can ever get past the doors of the Blood Centre..
Just to add to drama, the Doc i had medical booked with postponed until tonight (from last Wed) and he told me to wait on any Bloods until he had seen me first. So i had to wait on them anyhow.
Really want the ground to swallow me up right now, at least i would get some sleep!
:(:(
Tia Maria
20th May 2008, 12:28 PM
I really do know how you feel. :(
When it gets really bad I only have one way of dealing with it. If the appointment is at 9am, I tell myself it will be over by 9.30am. I then don't allow myself to think about anything, unless it is happening after 9.30am. If I start to think about needles, I replace that thought with 'You are an adult, just do it, then move on', I then go back to thinking about everything after 9.30am.
The reason I do this is that with fears and phobias it is often the 'dwelling on them' which allows us to work ourselves into a state. So everytime I start to have a 'needle thought' I replace it. I will do this right up to being in the waiting room, it tends to put me into automatic pilot mode but it gets the job done.
Maybe the phrase, 'You are an adult, just do it, then move on', won't work for you, so you just come up with your own.
After that 9.30am the relief and joy you feel when its all over, and know that you have done what's needed, is great.
All the best!
Cheers

I know it makes sense what you say, but my minds sub-conscious power is far far stronger than my sensible conscious mind. And there battling it out right now, sadly the inner mind is winning..
Well i went for the X-ray and Doc medical today so its just the Bloods left, The doctor wasn't very helpful when i asked for advice facing my phobia with the needles, i got the obligatory "your be fine, its only a needle" line...! You think being a medical profession they would understand how a phobia can affect someone and offer advice? NO, just a "your be fine" and a pat on the back! Cheers that really help me get through it... /sigh

I know exactly where you are coming from Lee. Needles I can handle. After being a type 1 Diabetic for the last 38 years on 4 injections a day it is no problem but then put me in a dentists chair and aaaaargh. I am petrified of them. i cannot stand the thought of someone prodding my teeth etc.No way hos'e. I will only go to the dentist if I really have to and then I have to have a drink to relax me but I suppose you can't do that with blood tests.
Anyway I am sure we will all be thinking of you. A friend of mine had a fear of oranges(True) This was cured by spending a day picking oranges and packing them.

Leccy-lee - don't try to reason with your sub-conscious power, just shut it down. Don't let it get a word/thought in. Its really hard to just stop thinking about something, which is why you need that alternative thing to think about instead.
It doesn't always have to be a sensible thing, maybe your alternative to thinking about needles is thinking about Charlie's Angels.....:D
You don't have to come up with a long term solution just something to get you through till Friday.
Good Luck!

Most doctors have a bed in their surgery. I told them I wasn't keen on having a blood test and was allowed to lie down whilst it happened then was left there for a few minutes to compose myself afterwards.

What needle? I didnt feel one at all :o:o BUT still wont stop me still being terrified again next time, ah the brains a fickle device sometimes...
I was brave and stayed calm, and i think the hypnotherapy last week worked too well in taking my mind off it, as i drove all the way to the city and realised i had so taken my mind off it, that i had forgot all the forms and ID i needed... Argghh Doh
Only time my eyes welled up a little, was sitting in the car after, i think it was just a massive tsunami of relief and worry letting off..
