Hi all,

Does anyone know if we go down the working holiday route can we just buy a single plane ticket from the UK or do we need a return? We will be able to show enough money in the bank for a return if needs be. What we are looking at doing is going out on a working holiday and then finding work and applying for a work permit / work to residency. I would ideally like to be able to close all our bank accounts down and transfer all out cash over but not sure if we'll be able to if we need to show how much is in our accout. Has anyone come across these problems before or could anyone please advise.

Thanks a lot

Tony

hi tony
we are thinking of doing the same. looking at other posts it appears that you need a ticket booked out of nz for entry., apparently a ticket to oz may be cheaper but some people reckon they can cancel some tickets for full refund.
regarding bank accounts, depends who your with. im an hsbc premier customer and they do a relocation service thus setting up a credit rating also.
you could hold the money offshore, most banks provide an offshore facility.
when are you thinking of going and what preparation are you doing re: medicals and police checks, other docs etc?

As you would apply for either a 12 month or 23 month visa, it is unlikely that you would need a return ticket as it isn't possible to buy one for this length of time. So pretty sure you would be allowed to buy a single ticket.

Hi Neil,

Cheers for the info - we are hoping to go by the end of October so starting to do the prep work now really and weighing up costs, i know the further in advance the flights are booked the cheaper they are so we are trying to set a date for leaving then working everything around that date. I will definately look into the offshore option too, sounds like a good idea to me!

Thanks

Thanks, yes that does make sense now, will definately help to save a bit of money with not booking a return.

Cheers!

I did what you did, in terms of entering on a WHV, then finding a job, then getting a work permit, then getting residency.
However, when I came in I *did* have a return ticket.
But, if I recall correctly, it said on my visa "onward passage waived".

Check NZIS site for information about the WHV. I remember it was quite in depth back when I did it. It definitely said that you either needed a return ticket or evidence of funds to buy one, plus evidence of funds to keep you going. I just printed out a bank statement and showed that to the official (had about £3000), but he didn't seem at all concerned anyway.

Myself and my girlfriend walked through immigration in Auckland without any mention of finances, just some friendly chitchat with the officer who stamped our passports and wished us well. I had printed out statements as well but they werent asked for at all.

When checking in with singapore airlines in heathrow they asked what visa we had but again didnt mention finances or how we would get a return ticket. As above the visa does state outward passage waived which means the airlines should let you on without a return ticket.

We're also going the holiday, job, perm visa route, shes found a job and i'm interviewing at the moment in wellington and all going well hope to have a perm offer very soon! Its a good way to do it I think.

Thanks, that gives me a lot more confidence! Will definately go down this route. Did you ship any stuff over or did you just pack your bags and go?

Thanks for the info! We'd really like to go down this route. We are just a bit concerned that it may all go wrong and we wont get offered PR at the end of it all. Do you know if its quite likely that PR will be awarded at the end of it all if our jobs arent on the skilled shortage lists. Do you go down the WTR route once you get a work permit?

Thanks

First time I came over on the WHV I was just a backpacker, so that's all I had. I accumulated stuff whilst travelling, including a car.
I went back to the UK and re-entered NZ on a work visa, just brought over a few extra things. I never shipped anything out as there's nothing at home I really need.

If you're able to come here on the WHV then just go for it, if you're here and available you're much more likely to get interviews and work offers, any employer i've met has been happy with me saying i want to stay here for a few years. If you're here working in a fulltime role with future prospects surely you'd be able to get working or perm visas?

Sounds like a good way of doing things - how do you go about getting a work visa? Do you apply for one once you get a job offer?
