We have had three quotes ranging from £5800 ish to £7400 ish for a 40 foot container. I suggest you review the threads on this subject as there are so many variables as to what is included and what is not. Get yourselves ready with lots of questions and then ask each company you speak to so you can compare services. Good luck :)

You need to determine if you can fit everything you are taking into a 20 foot or 40 foot container, for 20' container the cost will be around £3500.

If it's very close to a 20' container then you may do best to leave a few items behind (or maybe shipped a different way) to save costs, if you definitely need a 40' container then try to make sure that its full.

From another thread, you are thinking of coming to NZ on a working holiday scheme, I'm guessing that you would be entitled to bring over your household effects without paying customs charges but it might be worth you checking with them.

The website states "a current New Zealand work visa or work permit that was issued for a minimum of twelve months", so not sure if this include working holiday visa?

Thanks Ian, i think we will try our best to fit it into a 20' container to try to save on costs. Yeah the thought had crossed my mind about the customs charges. We have family over in NZ at the moment, do you think it would work to put the shipping in their names?

Thanks

is your house timber or brick? You must be very brave to be chopping down your house and to ship it over here! Maybe you can get a special deal on the boat that Speight's used for shipping a pub to England during the rugby?

other than that, I haven't anything useful to contribute.... :raebanana

hope all goes well for you

You won't be able to use a family member unless of course they meet all the requirements themselves and haven't already brought over their household effects.

In particular "you have resided or lived outside New Zealand for the whole of the 21 months before the date of your arrival in New Zealand", so I would guess that they would be even more likely to have to pay customs charges.

Thanks Ian, do you know a good website to get all the info from? Does anyone know approx costs for the charges by customs? is it a fixed percentage? If it works out a lot of money it may be worth us selling and buying new again once over there but would ideally like to take some of our personal belongings really.

Thanks

You need to start here:- Household Effects (http://www.customs.govt.nz/travellers/Household+Effects/default.htm)

If you follow the links it will take you to how they charge.

We shipped our 4 bed house and double garage (well, it's nearly to Singapore en route!) and needed a 40ft hi-cube container. The house was about 230 sqm and the garage was full of crap so maybe you'll get away with a 40ft standard, but cramming a bed house into a 20 footer is maybe a bit of a stretch :)

We paid £7300 plus insurance, and it's due to take about 4-6 weeks sailing time to get here.

If you need more details of what was shipped, just give me a shout, maybe able to help you estimate volumes!

Wehave just decided to go for a 20'container and we have got a 3 3bedroomed house full of furniture plus loads of craft stuff and stuff from garage. They will come and pack on the 28th of this month. We are not taking any white goods as our son tells us it is best to get them over there. We also don't have any wardrobes as we don't need them over there as they have walk in wardrobes in all the bedrooms. but we have got lots of stuff plus a guitar that my son has bought and asked us to move over. Two 42 plasma tv's too. It is costing us 3,500 plus insurance

The advice about white goods may not be suitable for everyone.

Certain products are less available and also more expensive in NZ, in particular front loading washing machines and condensing dryers. Certainly I wish that we had brought a dryer with us.

Agree that it probably isn't worth bringing wardrobes especially if you were short of space in the container, but the comment about walk in wardrobes is incorrect, yes it's common that the master bedroom will have walk in wardrobes, but the other bedrooms tend to just have fitted wardrobes. This is a generalisation as there will be some houses that don't.
