What clothing needed in Auckland in August?

Hello Auckland forum members,

We will be arriving in Auckland at the beginning of August this year :D and so I was just wondering what types of clothing we'll need for the weather then? The majority of our stuff is being shipped there and so the container won't arrive until mid September so we'll need stuff until then. Will we require winter clothes (jumpers, coats etc.) or more summery stuff at that time of year? (we're a bit confused about the seasons!)

Thanks

Justine

Of course, this partly depends on what weather you're used to, how much you feel the cold, etc.. I'm a chilly mortal from southern England, and spent last August in Auckland. It's still their winter at the beginning of the month, but the end can (but might not) start to be more spring-like. Have lots of layers so you can react to variations. When the sun is out, it feels really warm, but when there's no sun and/or it's windy, there's quite a chill. What I wore varied between shirt-sleeves and a body-warmer and shirt+thin jumper+thicker fleece+winter coat, and all possibilities between. I was sometimes glad of a scarf, too. (Okay, some of you might think I'm a wimp, but we all vary.) The sun goes down very suddenly at about 6 p.m., and any heat from the day is instantly gone. Another thing to be aware of is that if you stay in a traditional NZ house, it will feel cold indoors (see lots of threads on here), so be prepared to have your own personal micro-climate - warm nightclothes and dressing-gown, thick socks, lightweight quilted or fleece stuff.

This is good advice!!

During the day you should be fine with combinations of jeans, t-shirts, sweatshirts and a fleece jacket. You will definitely need a decent waterproof as when it rains here it Auckland, boy does it rain!!

Another thing to consider is that it can be pretty hard to get heavier items of clothing dry on cool overcast rainy in cold damp kiwi houses so I would suggest you bring things that can either by tumble-dried or are the type of fabric that will dry quickly e.g. fleece etc.

I agree with the others, and I would add a really good quality set of wet weather gear. It is not cheap stuff here, so if you can get better value in Canada bring it with you. It rains very regularly during the winter.

Couldn't agree more! I got rid of a relatively new, good quality rain coat with fleece lining before we came because it was too big for me. Wish I'd hung onto it now despite it swamping me, could really use it for standing on the sidelines watching DS play footie.

All the other advise is spot on, layers are the key!
