For anyone who is interested in partner visa timeframes - we submitted our partner visa and received approval within a timeframe of exactly four weeks! :raebanana

Hi Rose and Rob,
My name is Kerry. Could you give me a little detail of your application?
My husband is in NZ on a work Visa, is about to submit his EOI. I am still in S.A with our 4 kids awaiting a few things before we come over.
Would be great to hear from you!

Kerry,
the partner visa is only for the partners of people who are native to NZ, not the partners of people applying for residency, which is the route you will be taking :)
Congrats to roseandrob :)

Can you give any more details about your situation? I see a glimmer of hope for me!
I am a NZer and my chap (married in February) is on a work permit/visa (the terminology is beyond me). We have been in NZ 18 months and we are about to apply for PR for him. We are worried that it really will take 9 months to process - he would have to leave the country in December according to his current visa. But we have been together more than 4 years and have oodles of "evidence" and support from friends and family, including a jointly owned house, business, dog (!), visits from family and friends etc.
Hoping for encouragement....

I'd say you've got lots of reasons to be encouraged. He's already legally working in the country and married to you, a Kiwi. If your partner sponsorship application is in and time gets short on his work permit, from everything I've heard they'd be likely to pull the stops out to make things work for you.
I'm sure other people will be along with experiences to share. Go for it - you're entitled.

Hi,
I just got my work visa - with/through my kiwi boyfriend. I have 12 months right now, but from what I understand I can extend this after 11 months for another 12?! Does anyone know the procedure for this? What paperwork would I need? Many thanks for your help!
My visa took about two weeks!

I think what you have is a partnership work permit which is the best option for you if you haven't lived with your partner for 12 months. Once you have lived together for 12 months you can apply for a Partnership Visa which last 2 years and then after that you can apply for PR.
The Partnership Visa requires you to provide lots of evidence that your relationship is genuine and stable so start collecting evidence straightaway, including photographs of the 2 of you and mail addressed to both of you including the stamped addressed envelopes it came in.

I don't think this is right: once you have lived with your kiwi partner for 12 months, you can apply for permanent residency on the basis of your partnership straight away. You don't have to wait another two years to apply for PR. (I wonder if you are confusing PR with the IRRV, which you do have to wait 2 years to apply for?)

Yes, as JoJo points, out, this is not the case. Once you have lived together for 12 months, you apply for PR. There is no time limit on PR.
Good luck,

Man, it's a scary world out there. I just called Immigration and they said it would take 12 - 15 MONTHS to process the partnership PR. Wowie!!!
But, as you say, we can always get an extension of his work permit so he can stay in the country.
Thanks for your encouragement!

Hi Lizzie,
You got your visa in 2 weeks.. good job! Tell me, did you ever live with him as in share a flat or house legally (a lease) and how long have you been his girlfriend?
THis is important for me to know as I have to get my girlfriend here from Malaysia on a work visa under sponsorship, but her and I never lived together. How obsessed with "living together" was NZIS in your visa application?
Please let me know.. Thanks!
John

Hey, Sorry. Been away for a bit.
We've been together for just short of nine months but only six when I moved in - and lived together for a month before I applied (I was on holiday visa). I moved in to the house he has through work so am not on the lease etc but have evidence of using this address. We have a car in joint names.
I supplied loads of photos of us travelling around Europe and then NZ. Although I don't think it matters how long you have lived together for the work permit, I believe you neeed to be living together at the time of application.
Hope that helps!

I'm currently applying fo a parnership visa and was told by the Wellington Immigration office that a decision would be made within 20 working days which is pretty sweet.
Now if only I could get police clearance from home and be able to afford the medical!
