Just in case anyone was wondering, you are able to get an IRD number without the Category B documents they ask for on the IR595 form
http://www.ird.govt.nz/resources/file/eb4409019599b9e/ir595.pdf
As I don't work & need a number for my daughter & I, I thought I was going to have to take the dreaded theory driving test & get a NZ license before I could get a number but called them today & they said an international driving license is OK as long as I take it by hand into their Wellington office
May be of help to someone out there so thought I'd post it :)

And don't forgot to do one for your new baby eventually once your baby born (how long before the baby due???) All you need is the baby's birth certificate to get baby's IRD number.

Didn't realise kids were supposed to have IRD numbers...none of ours have one yet.

Thanks for that, Lindsey!
I would never have thought to ask 'cause it says differently in their documents. Too modest for my own good :roll

Glad the new baby will be easier :)

Oh, I didn't know that either and I work in tax! :roll That said neither baby has any money so it isn't like they'll be paying tax in the near future! :)
I've been in touch with the IRD about the OH getting an IRD number and they said to take her UK licence into an IRD office and they can process it - but only if the UK licence is a photo licence.

can use passport instead that what we use.
Also children's IRD number can used for set up child tax credit and open the bank account/kiwisaver.

Aparently they are not entitled to any tax credits as OH earns too much, so never considered getting IRD numbers. Confused now, so gonna have to check

Went and applied for mine and son's IRD numbers last week at the post office. I took both our passports, my UK driving licence (both parts) and DS's full birth certificate showing the parents details.
I photocopied picture page and visas from passports, birth certificate and both bits of my driving licence at the post office then went to the counter with the completed forms (see link earlier up this thread). The lady on the counter checked everthing, looked at all the originals and then gave me a receipt for both applications. No cost involved.

That's interesting as I was told post office wouldn't do it but now I might just try as it would save a trip into Wellington
Thanks Anneliese

PostShops will accept IRD forms provided you have filled the form in correctly, and have all the necessary original documents with you as well as photocopies of them. The PostShop will then give you a receipt for the application and you should receive your IRD number in the post within about two weeks.
But don't expect PostShop to answer any tax questions; IRD don't allow them to.

However.... DS's application has been returned by Inland Revenue because quote "you have omitted to provide the required identification documents" and "we do not accept overseas birth/certs as a form of ID".
Its really annoying as we had it all checked and verified by the post office! I'm assuming its the overseas birth certificate that proves my relationship to him that they don't accept. Will ring to find out exactly what they need before trying again. :roll

I provided a copy of his passport photo page with a copy of the PR sticker plus a photocopy of his birth certificate to prove I am related to him. Not quite sure why that isn't enough which is why I'm going to phone.

Hello Anneliese,
Did it work out in the end? Did you get the IRD number without the type B document?
They seem to want a offer of employment letter if you can't provide the other NZ docs, so I was gonna wait until I found a job.

Yes, kids have to have their own IRD numbers if youy are going to open them a kiwisaver account.
You can apply for your IRD numbers in advance of arrival. We did. One less thing to have to do when you first arrive.

You used to be able to apply in advance but this has been changed (since February I believe?)
You can no longer get an IRD number until you arrive in NZ, which will then take 8-10 days to get.
See IRD Numbers (http://www.ird.govt.nz/how-to/irdnumbers/) for more details.

Have you not got any of the type B documents?
New Zealand driver licence
New Zealand 18+ card
New Zealand student photo identification card
A letter confirming registration as a student in New Zealand (if this document is used you must provide a document from category A that contains a photo)
An "offer of employment" letter from your employer, on their company letterhead (if this document is used you must provide a document from category A that contains a photo)
International Drivers' Permit (issued by a member country of the UN Convention on Road Traffic)
Overseas Drivers' Licence (accompanied by an English translation completed by an LTNZ authorised translator, if not already in English)
I thought most would have an overseas drivers license?

I just took my passport with me to get mine. Complete with ... zero stickers in it. Just pleased I got my IRD number before I started work, otherwise I would have been taxed at the emergency rate of 75%, I believe it is.

I'm pretty sure the emergency rate isn't anything like 70%. I was charged it on my first pay slip as the IRD are very slow to issue a number, and don't recall it being too drastic.

The "No Declaration" rate is 45%

Well they have sent mine off, not sure if it will work though. I was told on the phone to do it in person in Wellington but I took it into the local post shop & they were unsure but have sent it off for me with a note on it saying I phoned & got told it would be OK, they also said they were relaxing this soon as not everyone has all the documents needed
So another job done, on to a few more change of addresses that keep popping up :exit
Oh does anyone know for sure that you are OK to hold Premium Bonds? I know it says you need to check with the country you are in but I dread a phone call to someone who wont be able to answer it so just wondered if anyone knows for certain?

Hi IanW99,
Not all the docs you listed as Category B documents is on the actual form.
The form only lists:
New Zealand driver licence
New Zealand 18+ card
New Zealand student photo identification card
A letter confirming registration as a student in New Zealand
An "offer of employment" letter from your employer
As far as Cat A docs are concerned we are fine.
Guess we will give it a try with just our passports incl. permit.
Txs!

That's what I thought, it was changed recently. If you look on the IRD website you will see that they have now added the other docs as I listed previously.
Trouble is that the AA in particular are very slow at updating this sort of information.
