My OH and I just having disccusion about getting our son's uniforms for his first day at school soon. My OH can't get his head around about the fact our son not allow to wear coat, only fleece jacket. I have notice lots of kids in christchurch walking to school wearing no coats in pouring rain:eek:
Our question is WHY they can't have coat? Has anyone break the "rule" to allow their child(ren) to wear coat?

Mine wear coats and for the last couple of mornings big padded raincoats as has been a bit brisk - school sweatshirt etc underneath but has never been a problem for us. However, have seen kids still in shorts going to school, all manner of different thermal stuff, multi coloured jackets etc so think dependant on school. We've found as long as our wee man has got on what is acceptable in class what he wears to get there doesn't matter :)

My daughters school say unofficially that they are supposed to wear school fleece, not coat so they can identify school children on way to school to keep safe. Can see their point, but B****r that.....with the rain we have had recently, she is definitely wearing a coat, don't care what they say and have just purchased some nice waterproof trousers for her too.

The boys' school has uniform raincoats, and together with their fleeces, that is warm enough.
Of course getting them to wear all that lovely warm and dry stuff is quite another matter...

Our son's school doesn't have an official school coat or fleece just a wool jumper, long sleeve shirt, knee socks and enclosed black shoes for winter uniform. However they must have a raincoat at school for if they have to move around the grounds in the rain e.g. going to the library/hall/toilet. There is a huge range of colours and styles worn and it doesn't seem to matter just as long as they've got a rain coat.
I'd say get your child a coat and be done with, I can't see the school getting overly strict about 'thou shalt not wear anything other than the school fleece'. At the end of the day you need to put your child in whats practical for the weather conditions and their health!
As an aside I'm amazed at how many kids I see waking to the senior school up the road in the rain with nothing but polo shirt, shorts and sandals on. My Kiwi friend tells me its a ploy to be allowed to go home because they've arrived at school soaking wet!!

That sort then, I was thinking getting him fleece jacket to keep him warm and pack waterproof coat in his school bag just in case of raining. He will going to school by bus, so he will be covered apart from waiting at our gate for bus and waiting at school's playground for coming home from school. Also he can use during playtimes/lunch.
If the prinipcal does have problem with coat, then I will talk to him about it.

Nah - it's "kiwi training" for them - for when they go to Uni or buy a house with no heating!
lol
My sons are exactly the same - and they never get sent home!

In the UK 20-odd years ago, I saw this thing start with children not wanting to wear waterproofs. My children started at a new school and when I was buying their uniform, my daughter (then 11) said, 'Don't buy that raincoat - I won't wear it.' I thought it was just her having an off-day, and OF COURSE she'd need it, so bought it anyway, but eventually gave it to the school second-hand shop totally unworn, where it joined loads of others, as it was just the thing not to use any outer clothes, whatever the weather.

Sophia, same here, our children never wear a coat and hardly wear a polar fleece.. and they are biking to school everyday. I actually really like watching them leave the house, they cycle to school by themselves (aged 9 8 6), they look very healthy. I don't like wearing a coat either.. The school won't have a problem with your son wearing a coat though, but he might not want it after a few days at school.
