Hi everyone
Could I have some opinions please. I have tried to contact INZ via e-mail , but just received a generic response which was not very helpful to our specific situation. I will phone them tonight when they're open but thought I'd ask you guys first, incase anyone had some words of wisdom for me.
We first wanted to immigrate to New Zealand a couple of years ago. My OH was a secondary school teacher at the time. We thought we'd have a shot at it. We did, we got selected but failed the skills assessment and so couldn't get teacher registration with NZ teachers council so we withdrew our ITA cos we knew it would be declined anyway as we then didn't have the correct level of qualifications for the occupation we had listed.
Round 2, we wanted to submit another EOI listing the occupation of Environmental Scientist (also on the absolute skills shortage list and also something that my OH has recognised qualifications in) but were told at the time that because OH had done nothing but teach for the past 5 years he could not do this because he would have to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that he was not going to teach in NZ. This confused us because surely not getting teaching registration was proof enough that he wasn't going to teach in NZ - ie - he legally couldn't teach in NZ. Anyway, we didn't want to make waves so we let it be.
Now 6 months on. OH has quit teaching for good and found a great job in environmental science directly related to his environmental science qualifications. All good! But we still want to go to New Zealand. We were just wondering if it would make any difference to us now if we submitted another EOI at this point because now he really is no longer a teacher and has a little bit of experience in his environmental science occupation. Do you think they'd still be hung up on him teaching for the past 5 years.
To me, it seems like OH should be allowed to change careers if he wants to. And it seems a shame that he should be classed as a teacher if he has quit the profession.
What do you think? Do we stand a chance? Any one had any experiences that are similar to this? Or know of any info on the INZ website where I could find some answers.
Thank you so much.
