Hi everyone,

Does anyone know if we'd be able to take our cats to NZ with us if we only have a working holiday visa? We are planning on getting a work permit and applying for residency once out there but were just wondering if they would let us take all of our belongings and cats with us.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Tony

I found this on the MAF site. http://www.biosecurity.govt.nz/imports/animals/standards/domaniic.uke.htm It doesn't make any mention of the status of the owners, only the formalities for the animal. And I suppose that makes sense - someone in the UK could very well be shipping a dog or cat as a gift or because they'd sold it.

You can take them, but you will pay tax on them.

Thanks, by any chance do you know how much the tax would be?

Thanks

No, I'm unsure how much the tax will be, but if our visas end up being less than one year long I'm sure I'll tell you how much it costs for my cat. ;)

If you have a work visa for less than a year, a student visa, or a visitors visa, you get tax charged on all your possessions including your pets.

Thanks, if we get a 23 month visa with we not have to pay tax on any of our pets or shipped goods?

If it's a work visa no, though I'm not sure how it being a holiday visa changes things.

I would honestly email customs and ask: feedback@customs.govt.nz

if it helps, we came over on a 1 year WHV, and shipped the cat over. No problems and no Tax!

Ah right, thats handy to know, maybe we'll be fine then (unless they have changed the rules again), will email customs just to be sure I think.

Thanks
