The MetService website has added multiple traffic cams in the major cities... interesting to flick through...
Here's Chch http://metservice.co.nz/default/index.php?alias=tr_chch_mem
Simply go to the weather page of the location you're interested in and you'll see the link to traffic cams if they have them....

Do the NZ traffic cops have the right to set up with their mobile cameras anywhere, or do they have to be (as in the UK) in a location approved in advance as suitable?
(I've got an Indic8tor, a gadget which warns me when I'm coming to a static camera or one of the places approved for a mobile one. A GOOD THING, a brilliant Christmas present last year from M.)

They seem to park their little vans alongside any road, anytime, anywhere... Bacardi-stylee.. it was a while before I actually realised what they were. They're unmarked and look like the local farmer's runabout!
I don't think the cams I linked to are traffic police, just traffic monitoring.

When on holiday in NZ two years ago I got pulled over going south just past Hokitika.
I wanted to say to the cop "Look at the size of this juggernaught of a campervan, and how cronky it is. You should be giving me an award for managing to make it go over 100Kms on the only bit of straight road for many many many miles."
I didn't, of course, I was a good boy and accepted my fine.
Paid in Wanaka a couple of days later. Woman at the bank said "were you on that bit of road south of Hokitika? Everyone gets done there." Thanks, helpful at this point!
When we got back to the UK I got a fixed penalty notice about a month later from an NZ speed cam. Where was it? in exactly the same spot as the cop stopped me. Oh the cheek!
Wrote to NZ police explaining I'd paid my dues. No response.
Ended up paying anyway as we were starting ITA process then and didn't want to risk anything on record for them to find and reject us.
Ho hum. Still proud of getting that great hulking lump of metal up to 100Kms though :)
Oh yes, and that was the day after I'd rammed the van into a shop's overhead sign in Greymouth and knocked a big hole in the roof. Oops! Of course it then started instantly raining really hard!
On the last morning of campervanning (Christchurch) I was backing out and realised I had forgotten to unplug main electricity cable. Snap. Oops! Good job I was on way to return van. Thankfully insurance covered any costs of my reckless damages.
Possibly campervanning is not for me :)
Had a great time though.

They are red hot on speeding here and use all available means to catch offenders........
Most traffic police cars have forward and rearward facing cameras and will park on side of road wherever they want to. Also they can record your closing speed if you're approaching each other on the highway, as happened to Ian Botham when he was over here for the England tour.
Also happened to colleague of Clare's on her way to work in Chch at 6.15 in the morning, 70k in a 50 k........

Often I think it depends on the mood of the cop if he's in a car.
I have seen cop cars do rapid U-trns and chase then pull over cars doing 55-60 in a 50 zone. Equally I have seen (and had) cops passing on the other side wave a 'slow down' signal at other cars and let them go.
Probably depends if they need to get their stats up for the week/month, or of they're going to be late home for tea!
In answer to the original question, there doesn't appear to be any notion of spots where they are 'allowed' to have speed camera's. They go wherever.
On a slightly different note I was once stopped (with LiamnRach in the car) at a random road block where they were testing every driver for alcohol. It was in a totally unexpected spot, but a good idea, I thought.

It does seem like they can go anywhere, but in fact they can only position themselves where it is safe to do so.
There is one road near us that they want to reduce the speed of as it isn't safe, but when the police were asked if they could monitor the road they said it wasn't possible as there isn't a safe place to position themselves.

Good to hear everyones tales of speeding, I've been done a couple of times. I do however object to the notion that its fair game to speed and try to get away with it, or glorify the fact that one has got away with it. Lets be sensible folks, its not about adhering to the law, its about not killing ourselves and other people just for the sake of some stupidity.
Got to go now as its my very tall pony's bedtime...........
