I sent an email to MAF about whether or not I would be allowed to bring in my Native American jewelry - some of which contain small coral pieces. I just received an update on this from a quarantine officer at MAF.
The MAF response:
With respect to CITES the coral pieces you describe will be fine to
bring in - wearing apparel is covered in the exemption below.
There are no quarantine requirements/restrictions on coral. I would
not worry about declaring them on the way in unless it in large/bulk
quantities - this would then be a Customs issue.
8.3.6 Wearing apparel
8.3.6.1 Passengers arriving at the border wearing CITES items e.g.
elephant bracelets, whale tooth necklaces, snakeskin boots etc. which are obviously personal effects, may be released subject to MAF QS requirements. If you doubt the the legitimacy of the import, it should be seized and referred to DoC.
