Ok all...now we have WTR (work to residence) Visas as Paul is an Electrician and we will be issued PR once he has been in full time employment for 3 months and he has registered with EWRB to obtain his provisional licence. This could not be done from the UK. We have been advised from the Moving Company that as we do not have PR we will have to pay GST on our household items even though they are used. Apparently we can get this refunded at a later date. 12.5% on our goods sounds nasty! :uhoh

Anyone know about this?

Unfortunately, I think this may be correct, but no first hand knowledge as we had PR.

Sorry, not terribly helpful I know.

Hope you guys are settling in well.

Well you don't need a PR to not have to pay GST.

See When no customs charges apply (http://www.customs.govt.nz/travellers/Household+Effects/When+No+Customs+Charges+Apply.htm) for details.

You situation is a little different though, I'm guessing that your WTR isn't 12 months or longer? In which case you may have to pay? I would check this with immigration.

Can I recommend NOT charging out of your house and planting a big smacker kiss on the lorry (sorry, truck) driver as he gets out of his cab though.

It was hilarious seeing Leachio do this, but scared the living cr*p out of the poor man!!!

Gosh, what a relief for you. Just a thought if you were to send your household goods to a relative, already living in NZ and a resident, would you pay GST then???

There must be a way to avoid having to pay this when entering on a tourist visa :roll

If you had a relative who has been outside NZ for at least 21 months within the last three (?) years (you are only entitled to bring goods within a reasonable time), I guess it may work.

They would of course have to lie about who owned the goods etc.

I'm not 100% clear on this, but it appears from reading the NZ Customs site, that if you are ineligible for duty-free import (say coming over on a visitor's visa, to secure a job then bringing everything over) you pay Import Duty and GST on the value of your goods. PLUS you pay import duty and GST on the cost of shipping over and insuring those goods?

So for example you ship £10,000 worth of stuff over, and it costs £4,000 to ship, you'd pay 7% Import duty and 12.5% GST on £14,000?

Ouch is that right?

I came over on a visitors visa, to apply for work permit when I got here. Had that in ample time for when goods came over, no gst charges.
I think I'd have gone mad if I had to pay gst, as I've ended having to fork out twice to get my goods after removal co in UK went into administration after my goods arrived in NZ, and Exporter & NZ Removal Co wouldn't release my goods and started charging me for storage too (on a seperate thread)

Not quite, you haven't taken depreciation into account. They allow a fair amount of depreciation of the value of the goods assuming they aren't new of course so the overal value is much lower.

If you arrived after November 2007 then you should have been charged.

I wonder if your circumstances in this case worked in your favour, or were you just very lucky?

It seems to be happening quite a bit not paying GST. We have made friends with some people in our block who came over on a tourist visa in October last year. They got a 2 year work visa in march and have just had their goods delivered to their apartment this week. They too did not pay GST.
