...to give them your new contact details ASAP after arriving.

We got woken at around midnight last night by Barclaycard fraud division to check on some recent expenditure on my card. Needless to say I had not been spending it up on the internet so they have cancelled my card and I'm going to have to wait to see my statement to find out how much I need to claim back.

I'm really incredibly lucky as I've literally only recently given them our new home phone number and address. If I hadn't somebody could have spent a LOT of money and they wouldn't have been able to contact me.

Its given me a major kick up the backside to make sure that everyone who needs to know, knows where I now am.

May I ask what you still use a UK credit card for?

How long have you been using a barclaycard outside of the UK for?

Just curious, as when we left the UK we were told by them that we would only be able to use their card outside of UK for a maximum of 12 months, and I'm a bit suprised that they have even accepted a NZ postal address.

I keep a Canadian credit card and have done for several years now, as I usually back in Canada once a year. I also use it in NZ from time to time although I have an NZ card as well. I ahve never had a problem, although I have been in touch with my bank in Canada and they know I am going to be using the card in both countries, as long as I pay it off they dont seem to mind. They did issue me with a new card but not because of anything I did, it was because a company in Canada had their records hacked into and all those who had bought something at the store were at risk.

I was told aswell that I wouldn't be able to use it so I have kept my Amex, got to update my address yet though, but it's good for EBay as I seem to get a good exchange rate & always seem to get a refund & it works out cheaper than paying in £ :)

We still have MBNA and had an AMEX up till a few months ago. Both of whom were happy to let us change our address and let us use the cards on an ongoing basis.

We kept them purely for spending in pounds and for use on trips back, saves on currency conversion charges, and you just do one transfer to pay it off. Plus the credit limits on them are generous, and you never know when you will need lots of $$ in hurry...

Hi Ian,

Of course you may ask! :) I've mainly used my UK Barclaycard when we first arrived and didn't have an NZ card. Also for some UK based internet shopping sites that I have used for sending gifts to UK based family & friends. Its also come in handy when I've been caught out by somewhere here not taking Amex as at the moment that is the only NZ credit card I have.

Have to admit I didn't think to check with them before we left UK as I've never had a problem using it overseas. We lived in NZ once before (3mths) and also Oz (2.5yrs) and I had no problems using it.

No problems changing the address on the card or my contact telephone number, although they have made a slight typo which I must get sorted.

It does of course help that we still have funds in the UK with which to pay with. We bank with First Direct so take care of doing that Online.

Hope this answers the question. As an aside, due to the phone call last night I have now told OH that I must have a card on his NZ Visa as I just don't feel Amex is widely enough accepted here.

Hi Anneliese, thanks for the feedback.

When we were leaving the UK we let them know, as they may have blocked any NZ transactions if they weren't aware that we would be using it in NZ (fraud protection) but they definitely said that this was limited to a maximum of 12 months.

From your experience, either this rule has changed or they don't actually enforce this condition.

BTW, I also dropped Amex here as it didn't seem much point once we got a NZ visa card of course.

Hi Ian,

You're welcome! We're keeping our NZ Amex at the moment as we have loads and loads of reward points as we were able to transfer the ones we'd accumulated on the UK Amex card to the NZ Amex card. In due course we might get rid of it or just keep it with a zero balance in case of an urgent need e.g. sudden flight back to UK.

We kept our UK credit card until recently....as long as we kept a bank account in UK we were allowed to continue as long as we wanted.
