Does anyone have any experience of Taranaki, and New Plymouth?? We are staying there for a week in October (inc Labour Day). Besides researching employment opportunities (Power stations/ oil & gas operation) we're renting a house to get a feel for the Life style, cost of living etc.

Are you looking for activities ? Loads of tramping . Skiing should still be going strong on Mt Taranaki. Visit the Pukeiti gardens - the rhoddos will be in flower. The Forgotten Highway is worth travelling down. Maybe hire a board and go surfing. There are natural hot pools too. Its an interesting place for Maori and early settler history. The weather can be notoriously fickle over Labour weekend - be prepared for anything.
