Morning all
This one is aimed at all the UK nurses who have recently moved to NZ, however the thread may be a tad personal so I'll understand if there's not much of a response...
Based on your offer of employment in NZ, did you have to take a drop in salary or did you get lucky? Like I say, I appreciate it's a personal question so don't expect numeration figures to be quoted, but if a percentage based on UK nursing bands could be advised it'll be much appreciated.
OH has 15 years experience in Renal (Haemodialysis) and at this early stage of our move to NZ she's trying to get an indication of equivalent roles and more so salaries.
Thanks :nice1

Everyone in my little corner of Auckland City Hospital with at least 5 years experience starts on Level 2 Step 5 ( about $57000 basic I think ) including those with 25 years experience.
I haven't met anyone who hasn't taken a paycut when they came here.
You can factor in another $10000 or $15000 for unsocials and if you can be bothered with the portfolio thing you can progress through the Levels fairly easily ( you can go straight from Level 2 to 4 )
I keep forgetting that not everyone is in the NZNO and if you aren't, then the payscales above don't apply. Everyone I know who isn't a member chose to pay a % of members fees and accepted the new conditions and some chose not to pay and are still on the old payscales. Non-members can negotiate their own conditions, but I don't know anyone who has done this.
It's not like in the UK where the RCN or Unison negotiate the pay rises and everyone ( including people not in union ) gets those pay rises.

I am assuming it will be a pay cut. My husband is joining the police there and it is quite a hefty paycut and no overtime. However, ex collegues of mine who are now in Chch have said that is a livable wage.
as we now pay over £1200 per month in mortgage and should be virtually mortgage free out there it should balance out.
I am flying out there next week to check out real cost of living prices such as supermarkets, pubs, meals out etc. It is hard to judge on line as you can't tell if you are looking at their equivilant of Waitrise, Tesco or shops suchnas netto orKwik save.
will post finding on return.

This was exactly the case last week when my wifes offer of employment came in from Princess Margaret Hospital, Cch.
This seems to be the norm.
Needless to say this is a hefty paycut as my wife is a sister in the UK, and will be dropping to a standard RN post.
Hope this helps

Know what you mean Clare dropped from being a Matron on top band 8A but hey we're here and loving it.
Also we reckon that nurses are paid better here in NZ compared to rest of the workforce , in Clare's experience most of the nurses here seem to be the chief breadwinner .

As a UK nurse with 2 years experience I will be taking a small pay cut but we will have the benefit of a smaller mortgage and my OH will not need to work (he WILL work though :p). I have already sized up my trousers :D
