If I understand correctly (in the US), the term "CV" is used to indicate academic experience and qualifications; and the term "resume" is used to indicate professional (private sector, industry, etc.) experience and qualifications.

So if I am updating my resume (and converting it to a CV, I guess), what do I need to do differently?

Ultimately, I can't figure out if the difference in terms is semantics or something I need to adapt to. I'm sure that there are online resources that I haven't found - I've searched but haven't found anything that looks reliable.

For that matter, is there such a there such a thing as an "English to American" dictionary? ;) 'Cause after awl, Ah'm from Texas and y'all don't always unnerstan' whut we say. :laugh :laugh (laughing at myself!) Which means I probably need an "English to Texan" dictionary!

Hi,

I've had my CV re-written by a NZ CV service in the hope that it better reflects the expectations of the recruiters over there. Can't say it's made much difference so far but hopefully it will when I get over there in person. The company I used was relatively inexpensive and provided a good service. PM me if you want details.

Thanks for the tips and the link. I'll take a look at it - at first glance it seems much clearer than anything I've found.

i thought that a curriculum vitae was the same as a resume, though i had my cv changed by a canadian firm for their immigration process, having seen both CVs are better.

Susan,
In my current job, I've dealt quite a bit with American CVs - mostly for academics. They are usually longer than a resume, 3 or 4 pages. They include things that we normally leave off resumes, like publications, presentations at conferences (etc.), interests/hobbies.

One of the NZ job sites had a sample CV that I downloaded. PM me if you want a copy.
