Can someone help please  I've been doing the on line car theory test, and there seems to no rhyme or reason to this question. When I think it must be no it's yes, and when I think the blue car has to give way or there will be so many crashes its no:eek:. I can't work this out at all, or am I just being dumb.

Oh I feel your pain as am studying for theory test now :yes Everything else about test is fine for me but this give way thing is very strange - I'm developing a complex about blue cars now too :laugh The ENZ learner drivers thread has some further explanations on it too that forumites helpfully posted so you could try there :)
Best of luck

Best rule of thumb... assume nobody else knows the rules and will run into you if you aren't attentive.

The easiest way I find to remember it is this:
If there is a car turning to go across you from your right then you must give way to it (like you would waiting to get out at a roundabout - cars coming from right have priority).
For the ones at junctions this rule works as well EXCEPT - check the road markings! No markings (or both roads marked the same) then above rule applies; single line across road means give way; double line means stop. Give way has priority over stop for who should go first i.e. if you are at a stop line you must give way.
Make any more sense? No? thought not.
At least I tried.

If there is single YELLOW line, it mean STOP as well as double yellow. Single WHITE line is give way, don't want you get mix up with two different type of single line in two different colour!

I had exactly those same issues when I was looking at the online theory test. It's the thing that is stopping me applying for my NZ licence. Ironically my husband is a kiwi and he gets the answers wrong too, but of course he already has his licence :(

The law is changing, if it hasn't already, I'm led to believe, that if you are from UK you don't even need to do the theory test any more, you can just convert your licence.
I think that's true, sure PP told me that recently, or did I dream it?
Must be on DoT site somewhere......

I heard it was changing but I don't know if it has yet. I must admit I was hoping for that :)

Sounds like you dreamed it to me :D
Actually, it's not just from the UK but other countries as well, but the rule change hasn't come into force yet (no date for it yet).

Cheers Ian, just been searching for evidence to no effect.
I was just thinking I was actually going mental(er).

If you are interested in searching for it then just search for rule 10003 which covers this and other rule changes coming in soon.

If it helps, when I was doing the theory test, I turned the blue car giving way question the other way round in my head and I understood it better, so instead of does the blue car have to give way, I read it to myself as does the red car have the right of way...
Helped me anyway!

its o.k... you're not going mad! basically the pictures on the online theory test are so small, you can't see the colour of the traffic lights (which help you figure out whether the driver needs to give way or not) - this drove me mad, until someone lent me some of the paper tests which have bigger pictures and show what colour the traffic lights are. In reality, on the actual test, you can see the traffic lights, but when you do the online theory one, you can't as the picture is so small, so its pure guesswork. It drove me mad until I figured it out, so I know exactly what you're talking about.
Might be worth popping into the AA and buying a few sample papers, - think they are $2.50 each and then if you are still getting them wrong, might need a re-think, but I suspect that (like me) its just that you can't see the colour of the traffic lights. Obviously this doesn't apply to 'give way' questions where traffic lights aren't involved, but if you are persistently getting the ones with the traffic lights wrong on the online theory test, I'm pretty sure thats your answer! - was for me anyway (and I passed my test last week with full marks so must have been doing something right). Good luck!

Hi all
sort of related question...
I have one of the old paper licences...should I convert to one of those little card ones before coming over?
PS yellow lines? white lines? blue cars? red cars? I'm sure it will all make more sense to me when I'm there:yes
Perhaps not!

Hey, tea drinker!
Have a look at this site and it will all make sense:

Yeah, this is fine in theory, but nobody pays a blind bit of notice to it anyway!!

If you buy the Road Code book at $25 it has all the possible questions in there.

Both me and my OH still only had the old paper license from the UK when we arrived and had no problems using them e.g. for car rentals, getting NZ license etc so I wouldn't bother unless you want to.
Did have a few strange looks though, so I'm guessing that they aren't very common over in NZ.

Thanks Pebbles and Ian
Will keep hold of the paper one
(it gets funny looks in the UK as well...a 'youth' looked at it a while back and made a comment about...'hey, look, it's one of those really old ones!)
Mmmm, that made me feel really good!:laugh

I went around in circles all Sunday last week with the online theory test! I just couldn't get it right until i found a nice explanation.
If there is a car waiting on the right to join your road, if you cannot see an indicator flashing then he has priority as he must be going straight over or Right. Also if the car coming towards you is indicating Right to pull across you then you give way to him even if you are pulling into the same road on your left. I think!.....well i seem to be answering them right now.
