Hi everyone,

I'm from the Philippines. I have been lurking around these parts for quite some time in t he past 2 years or so and have only recently decided that I would finally "go for it"! We're really doing this for the kids (got 2 so far, 1 is 1year and 7 mos, the other is barely 3 weeks old) as I believe NZ is the right environment for them to grow up in.

My wife and I are looking forward to begin the exciting process of immigration (or emigration, depending on which you prefer) to NZ.

Here we go with some background info and some relevant questions: (Mods, feel free to let me know if I should create a totally different thread, I just felt it would shed some light as to how I came to these forums so for now it'll be part of the Intro)

Here's where we are so far:
1. We've signed up here knowing that all the info you need is somewhere and all we need to do is search and ask (if we don't find anything through the search of course) Like many of the other forums I actively participate in, I believe that search is our friend.

2. We've begun completing the EOI online and have a couple of questions that are specific to our situation.

3. We've decided that my wife be the principal applicant for the SMC as she is a Pharmacist and as most would know, its part of the LTSSL of NZ. This means more points and based on the 85% EOI we've done, we're at 150 points. (no job offer) However, when reading up the LTSSL page it states that "NZ Registration" (on Column 3) and "Equivalent to B Pharm" (on Column 4) are required if we're to claim any points for her qualifications being part of the LTSSL.

3. a. How do we go about it, since NZ Registration with the NZ Pharma Council can only begin once we're already IN NZ?

3. b. We understand we can start the process for B Pharm "equivalency" something we believe is similar to the US FPGEE process. Does this mean before we claim points for being in the LTSSL she needs to get thru the "equivalency" process AND get NZ registration? (as mentioned above can only be completed IN NZ) This is a Catch 22 situation right here, since a large part of being registered is the 26-week internship in NZ.

4. My wife completed her course from a school that's not listed in the Basic Qualifications Recognized by NZIS, does this mean to get points for these we need to get assessed in full by the NZQA and claim the 50 points in this area of the EOI?

5. Lets move ahead of ourselves and assume she will get the NZQA assessment, does this qualify here to get points for the "recognized New Zealand Qualification" as well?

5. a. @Questor I read somewhere that you're a Pharmacist and got a job offer before even beginning to get the NZ Registration. Any hints as how we could take that route as well (I'm assuming you went through the WTR route though, with that set-up) My query is say my wife doesn't get a job offer before leaving, will she need to get through the whole NZ Pharma Registration BEFORE we file the EOI or can we file the EOI and claim the LTSSL points since registration will be completed in NZ as is the case for most health workers?

I'm hoping you guys can shed some light on these questions and be a guiding light to us as we embark on this journey.:yes

hi there,

welcome aboard! and good luck with the process!

my name is katrina. my husband, michael, and i were granted our residency last week. we expect to get our visas in the next 2-3 weeks. i am a pharmacist in the san francisco bay area. although i can't answer some of the questions you asked specifically, i thought i could tell you about my situation.

my husband was the principal applicant on our application. we are both on the long term skills shortage list. i am sure i had enough points to be the main person, but b/c he has so much more experience, he had a few more points than me. so, that is how we decided to submit our EOI.

i just started to really look into the pharmacy registration in nz. all the information is pretty daunting to me! i do not have a job offer yet, and i have not taken the CAOP (competency assessment for overseas pharmacists) yet. i think my situation differs from your wife in that i was educated in an english speaking country, so i do not have to take any of the language competency exams, such as the TOEFL. i received my doctor of pharmacy at the University of California, San Francisco. i will be applying for my registration under the REQR (Recognized Equivalent Qualifications Route).

as far as i know, you have to be approved by the NZIS before you can register with the nz pharmacy council. also, as i browse through the postings for the pharmacist jobs in nz, many of the ads say that you have to be registered with the nz pharmacy council to apply. so, kind of a double edged sword!

well, sorry for the lengthy response. i hope all goes well with your EOI! let me know if i can be of any more help to you and your wife!

kind regards,
katrina

Thanks for the warm welcome guys! (and gals of course) Once we get everything sorted out I'll prolly post a step by step guide. We're looking to get in NZ by 2010, so when all goes well, we'll see you there!
