I seem to have heard about a fair few redundancies in NZ at the moment. Having only been here 2 years its hard to put it in context, is it happening more at the moment? Is it affecting particular areas of work?
Have you, or someone you know, been made redundant in the last few months? If so what kind of work was it?
My OH's work is laying off quite a lot of people - he's in IT.
Cheers

While round neighbours for dinner last night discovered that several SICON employees have just been made redundant locally - I must admit it does seem to have been in the last few months that this has begun happening noticeably... not great but I think this is a global thing..

Yup, me!!! Working in telecomms but the firm was on dodgy ground anyway, one of the bigger firms has stepped in and bought the company out, not sure if it was to do with the global upheaval or just bad management. There seems to be a lot of recruitment going on in the field at the moment with a big shortage of qualified staff.

One of the PPCS meat works near us has just closed laying off 466 people. That's huge for the little town and will have a massive impact on the area. (Dannevirke):no
Bosses ready with jobs when plant closes
24.05.2008
Employers from overseas and within Hawke's Bay have already been in contact with PPCS to talk about future opportunities for workers at the Oringi plant near Dannevirke.
Last week workers at the meat plant were told by PPCS management that declining sheep and lamb numbers, drought conditions, competition for land use specifically from the dairy industry, and competition from rival meat companies in Southern Hawke's Bay were to blame for the probable closure.
On Tuesday morning the management will announce to the 466 Oringi staff whether the meat plant is officially closed but no one is under any illusions about the possibility of a rescue deal.
Details of redundancy packages are expected to be announced at the same time.
PPCS's North Island human resources adviser, Gary J Williams, said yesterday that if the plant closes on Tuesday the company would not abandon the workers.
Affco had already made inquiries, as had meat processing companies in Australia, while some Oringi staff had already moved on to other employment.
``If the need arises we will be setting up a resource centre in Dannevirke, where workers will have access to our staff,' Mr Williams said.

No I don't know anyone who has been made redundant. I mainly mix with public sector workers, who are generally in demand during recessions, so that may be it.

Quick question:
Does NZ have any Unemployment Insurance for such cases, being made redundant?
