Our TV has just died on us and we're wondering whether to fork out for a new one here or wait til we get to NZ (not a popular suggestion to the kids nor me with Wimbledon coming up!).

From info on here I see the tv must have PAL B, G or H to work in NZ but how do I find out this out? Looking on-line, there's no reference to it in the product blurb and never having bought a TV before, haven't a clue where to start looking?

What is the make and model? I shall try to do some investigation for you if you like?

Sorry, just read your post properly!! Your TV is broke...doh....didn't read that bit! Any TV shop in the UK should be able to tell you the versions of PAL (whether it be I/B/G). My understanding is that most new TVs are compatable with any PAL version; but you should check this with the store advisor. I just bought a Sony and it has all versions of PAL.

I suppose the question you have to ask yourself maybe one of cost? How much do TVs cost in NZ compared to UK? Reading through the posts elsewhere on the forum, I think they may be more expensive in NZ, so you may be better off going to Curry's and asking the 'PAL' question and going from there?

We will be taking our TV with us......(I know you probably didn't want to know that bit eh??!!)

Good luck

Thanks Liam, as you say best to go into a shop and ask but just thought some research on-line would be a good idea but useless in terms of PAL info.

Enjoy your TV in NZ ! The ads are annoying and most TV rubbish!! Seriously I'd happily be without one as we were pre-kids but I'm fighting a losing battle here v. OH and 3 kids!

Most stuff these days has a copy of the product specification online, which will include details of the formats the TV will work in. They can sometimes be a bit tricky to track down though, especially for non-mainstream brands.

Here for example: http://www.consumer.philips.com/consumer/en/gb/consumer/cc/_productid_52PFL7762D_05_GB_CONSUMER/Flat-TV+52PFL7762D-05

You need to click on the Specification tab, then scroll down and click on the "View more technical specifications" link, which then shows the "TV System" specs.

I'm reminded of where Arthur Dent eventually found the details of the by-pass the council was planning to build that necessitated the bulldozing of his house: "It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying 'Beware of the Leopard'!"

You might just need to look harder, in other words :)

OH is keen to get a new TV later this year before we leave for NZ, so far I've told him it may not be worth it but reading this it sounds like it may be after all. I for one would be interested to know what you decide and if you do buy a TV whether it works in NZ or not. Thanks and happy hunting. :D

As others have said, you need to look up the technical specs of the TV that you are interested in.

If you can't find the technical spec on the manufacturers website then do a search for the product manual which will also have it listed (normally).

I wouldn't bother looking for a TV that has a built in Freeview decoder as this won't work in NZ.

You will also need to consider the guarantee of the TV and will you be able to get it fixed in NZ should it go wrong.

For the TV standard you should be looking for PAL B/G and on some TVs it is listed as country instead in which case look out for 'Germany'.

Also remember that depending on where you move to some UK tvs won't work properly even if they have the right PAL.

We're in Auckland and had to buy a dvd recorder in NZ in order to get TV1 - 3 as our television's tuner wouldn't pick up the TV1 - 3 frequencies.

Can get a 37" LCD TV here for $16-1700, probably less now.

Don't know how much they are in UK now, but may be worth thinking about the hassle if you going to ship it etc. There is the guarantee/warranty issue if you bring a new one from UK.

Crikey....

That is actually very good value for money and comparable to the best deals that you can get here (UK) at the moment....I am standing back in amazement, cos I always thought that it was faaaaaar more expensive to buy elec goods in NZ. Coooool...

Also, technically, if it's less than a year old you're supposed to pay import duty on it! But I doubt if you'd have to in reality.

Even so, the shipping costs of the thing would probably render it uneconomic, unless you had a fixed-size container anyway.

Yup Liam n Rach, that is how much I got my Philips for last year, fab TV, from one of the shops in Hamilton. It was on offer mind you but there are always bargains available, you just have to look round and bide your time :)

The economic bit means if you have cash available you can negotiate some great deals, bear that in mind :nice1

I'd get a cheap portable for Wimbledon and the kids till you move over here.
We were impressed with what you can get for your money on the electrical side of things, plus no worries of incompatibility, damage in transit, or warranty return.

Only downside is that the remote controls seem to have migrated to her side of the couch.
