I know this is probably a stupid question and that other people have asked about whether to take specific items and others have suggested to take everything but are we talking household items or personal items that we have accummalated over the years as I'm a bit of a collectorholic. I love music and films and have quite a large collection of records, cds, tapes, DVD's. Also I'm a bit of a softie and have a vast collection of bears.

I have got the movers coming round to give quotes as we leave for NZ about the middle of July and we seem to have more "just stuff" (as I call it) than furnishings going.

I'd say this depends partly on what kind of move you're doing. If you're having a container, and all your cherished 'stuff' will fit in it, it won't cost any extra, will it? And if it makes you happier when you get to the other end, it's well worth any bother of packing it up. If you're not having a container and you'll have to pay by weight/number of boxes, you're into the area of putting a monetary value on having your collections - more difficult, and very personal.

In some ways I think that 'stuff' is more important than furnishings. A fridge is a fridge, a sofa is a sofa etc, all of which can be replaced. 'Stuff' probably has lots of good memories associated with it and is much more personal and not easily replaced. Having said that we've just chucked out a load of old cassette tapes because we've not listened to them in 20 years and have what we want on CD now. But, if you've spent a lot of time building up collections of anything then wouldn't you feel really sad to get rid of them? Depends on what everything means to you.

Also agree with JandM though, I guess it does depend on how much it will cost to take your stuff with you. I think Id take everything that means something to me (guess that includes OH and kids) :exit.

We brought somewhere between 40 and 50 boxes of books....couldn't imaging owning a house without plenty of good books on shelves. If your stuff gives you plenty of enjoyment and makes you happy and isn't just collecting dust at the back of a cupboard then bring it all :)

We cut our books down to three boxes, are taking three guitars, a flute, some action figures, all of our movies (on DVD) and video games (with respective systems) and our clothes.

So we're really only bringing the stuff, but that's what's important to us. We did sell a lot of it though. The books, for one, I know are half of what we used to own.

We did get rid of half of our books,

I say bring it all. If you love your stuff you will miss it if you don't bring it. I kick myself daily for not bringing more out with me. I thought I could replace a lot of it once I got here and I can't. It takes along time to build up your stash of belongings and it takes along time to replace them too. When your container arrives it feels amaizing and to see all your belongings again is wonderful. I didn't bother bringing a lot of our stuff as I knew that I would need some of them as soon as we arrived, in hind sight we should have just rented furniture etc until it arrived. Check out www.rentessentials.co.nz and www.mrrental.co.nz. Hope this helps and good luck with your move.
