I've just seen the thread for what would you bring if you had some extra space and have to admit to being intrigued on the response of paint. Paint? Is paint and wallpaper expensive to buy then??

It might be interesting to see what people around NZ paid for their paints for internal or external work. And what do you think to the prices?

If they are high I know what I'm bringing with me!! I love decorating so might just have to pack my toolbox. Yes, I do have my own tool box, and no it is NOT pink :)

We haven't actually done any painting (internal or external) yet but from memory a 4 litre tub of Dulux White one-coat was around $100.00. When you're earning in NZ$ that is a LOT of money!

However I think one of the things you're not allowed to bring into the country if you shipping a container, is paint! You might get away with it if you are just freighting a few boxes but I would't want to take the gamble.

You can take paint in the container as long as it is non-flammable (=not oil-based, but water-based). We took 6 tubs of (water-based) acrylic primer undercoat, no problems with the shipping line or Maf or anyone. Yes, they are much more expansive here.

If you're coming from the US, expect about the same price for paint. Otherwise, if you're coming from the UK, don't expect it to be as dirt cheap as you're used to.

We have paid between $119 and $139 for 10 litres at Mitre 10, dulux paint too.

A lot of the colours we have found have to be mixed there in the shop.

We picked one yesterday, a brownish colour, when we got home and hubby put on bit of the wall, its too dark...............they wouldnt consider changing, so an expense we could do without!!!

Its a lot of money when you earn $ too.............

Really? I found it several times more expensive than the US. US$16/gallon vs. NZ$100+ per 10 liters.

Ooooh great link Neil, thank you. I wouldn't have thought of looking for paint on Trademe, are there any other places you'd look for it, other than B&Q style shops??
