This is probably a strange request, but we want (need) to live in an area that has stabling available. My OH's hobby (and hopefully career one day) is riding horses and instructing. First prize is somewhere that there are a bunch of stable yards that she could teach at during the day between taking kids to kindy etc.

If there is anyone on the forum that has a feel for the horse scene (eventing, dressage and jumping) we're really appreciate some pointers.

Clevedon/Whitford would be a good starting point (south-east).

Cheers Gil - that was quick. I'll add those areas to our list of places to live.

Have a look at Kumeu as well. I think there are races out there and the couple of times I've been out that way I've always seen horses.

My sister is a horse rider and "manager" of high school's equestrain team. She live in the areas of Kumeu, Riverheads and Massy where is lots of horses is and they have lots of showing, cross-country etc every weeks or so. I would recommend you to look at this areas after been stayed with my sister recently.

I dont know much about this, but the St. Heliers Pony Club has leased stables and land and there are always horses stabled there, and I believe there are riding lessons as well. This might be an option if you decide to live close in to the city. Their stables and riding tracks etc are on Kepa Road.

Wow - what an awesome response. Looks like I'm going to spend most of my day flipping between realestate.co.nz, trademe.co.za and wises.co.nz. Lots of options. And I don't feel like work today, knowing that most of you get to celebrate the Queen's birthday.

Was going to suggest this as well as Kumeu and Riverhead. Just bear in mind that although these places are close to Auckland, from somewhere like Coatesville it would be a pretty long commute into the city. Where do you need to get to to work Andrew?

I've spent some time looking at properties and schools (we need a school in 2 years time for #1). Kumeu looks great. OH should be able to find something to keep her busy with all the horse yards around.

Concerning where I may work, who knows... Our plan is to move in early January 2009 and then look for jobs. I'm kinda in IT and Broadcasting, so it looks like Auckland CBD will probably be it. However, I have this romantic fantasy that the new rail link that is supposed to start running in July to/from Helensville would get me to the city. Or perhaps I can find an employer that is prepared to let me work from home. It looks like broadband is available in Kumeu.

Perhaps I'm jumping the gun and we should just rent for a year or so in Auckland near my OH sister and mum. But it is fun to dream;)

The horsey stuff is of great interest to me and my two girls as we are all learning to ride and would like to continue this if we get to go to NZ. The hope would be to get a pony there once we are settled. In the meantime does anyone know how much riding lessons are and how much for stable manangement in NZ
The simpsons?

We'd also be interested in the above if anyone knows the costs of lessons and stabling. My OH hopes to be teaching horse riding instead of working in an office 9-5, so this would give us an idea of what she could expect to earn.

depend on where you live? I know one down the road for my son to try out, it is $35 for 30mins, but it is quite pricey  so we didn't use them
