Hi - we're looking for somewhere really very cheap to stay whilst we get our car sorted but everywhere seems rather pricey... any suggestions would be great. We are not wanting to have to share a dorm but a hostel would do - there's only my wife and I.

If you don't mind a hostel, try the backpacker places many have private rooms for a couple, and availbility this time of year should be no probs.

I stayed at Bamber House nr Mount Eden for a few weeks when I first arrived, a pleasant place and nice n quiet.
