A friend of mine who is currently on a 12 month work permit called customs this morning and was told that from the 6th of June, GST is determined as and when the goods arrive in country and your 'status' at the time.

It was previously a case that if you arrived on a holiday permit (for example), that if your goods arrived weeks later, you were still charged GST on the basis of your 'status' at the time of entry.

Anyone else heard anything similar? This is good news for us (and probably others) who may arrive on a permit other than PR.

I haven't heard this but hope it's true. We are going on visitor's visas so GST would be a forgone conclusion. Fingers crossed this is the case.

Just checked this out with my shipping company and they haven't heared anything about this. They also say that it is highly unlikely to be happening. Kind of understand....why would NZ miss out on the income???

We'll just have to wait and see what happens.

does seem odd since it wasnt that long ago that they changed the rules to make sure everyone DID get charged GST if they entered on something other than PR or long term visa.

I understood this rule had been around for quite a while but not regularly enforced. My understanding is that it should now be enforced and this is a fairly recent change in policy so not sure if this would have changed in such a relatively short period of time :(

Guess what I'm saying is that unless you can get something in writing from the NZ customs/MAF I would budget for paying GST unfortunately.
