Hi
My husband, two kids and I are seriously thinking of moving to NZ. We have often talked about it but have decided to look at it seriously now. We are a bit overwhelmed at present and are looking for some honest thoughts/advice on where to start!
Should we use one of the companies to " sort it all out for us" or is it just as simple to do ourselves?
What about the points system? I am a registered nurse with more than 10yrs cancer/palliative care experience i have BSc, Post grad dip and currently doing a masters degree will this be enough? Hubby works in auto trade and has mainly experience rather than higher education qualifications. We are both 35yrs.
Any info appreciated

I should say so!!

I think you'll find that most forumites will say don't use a company to 'sort out' for you. Using these companies will probably cost you an arm and a leg and you can get loads of great advice from this forum and its free!! :D

My OH is a nurse and we have been in touch with TONIX who are an agency specialising in recruiting nurses to NZ. We are fairly early on in the process but up to now they have been great. If you search the forum you will find that lots of nurses have used their services (which are free).

There is another agency called Geneva Health (I think).

You can google TONIX and send them an email. They will email back and then phone you to talk things through with you.

Anyway, welcome to the forum and best of luck with your plans :yes

I will look at Tonix site in more detail thanks. I have come across it but went into overload with all the info. I have also had a look at jobs via hospice networks as i would be hoping for a position equivalent to my current post and can't bear the thought of going back into hospitals ( Community based at present!!! so get cabin fever in stuck inside too long!)
Thanks again

Hello and welcome.

The immigration process is slow and torturous at times, but not difficult to complete yourself, and there is plenty of help and advice available through this forum at all stages.

On the face of it, it sounds like you will have enough points with yourself as main applicant.

I believe there is a shortage of good nurses here, although it's not my field. There were certainly many healthcare recruitment reps at the expo's we visited before moving, which would indicate that to be the case.

Good luck with it all.

Hello and welcome!

Every single question I've had has been answered right here on the forum, so there's no real need for someone to "sort it all out" for you.

It sounds like you would have no problems having enough points as the primary applicant. Try going on www.seek.co.nz - there's lots of nursing jobs on there. I would recommend getting started on your nursing registration (if I recall others have stated it takes quite a long time).

Good luck with all of your plans!

Good luck and welcome to the forum. Definitely do it yourself, don't waste any cash on companies. It isn't too difficult, just an exercise in filling in forms and gathering paperwork mostly.
With your quals and experience you will certainly have enough points and kudos to get a speedy passage I would think. And as a nurse with that experience, they'll bite yer hand off!! :laugh

Go to the immigration NZ website and read through. There is a basic points calculator on there, only takes a minute and you'll know where you stand.

Best of luck.

You will be easy to get in with your nursing experiences.
We managed to get in using my BSc degree for more points as well as my OH's job offer in auto trade as panel beater (on short-skill list) despite he have no qualifiations but years of experiences just like your OH, also we picked christchurch as more points if you get job outside of Auckland.
BTW welcome to forum :nice1

Welcome to the forum..:)

There is no need to hire immigration consultant as it will just cost you additional expenses. You can do it yourselves by reading information in New Zealand Immigration website. Folks here at the forum are very helpful should anyone seek advise.

Hi and welcome. :)

My hubby and I are doing everything ourselves. This forum is awesome and so are the people here. So far, if I had a question, it was answered and there is a ton of useful information here. :) Hubby and I are taking one thing at a time so we don't feel overwhelmed. Believe me, I did in the very beginning. :laugh But things are moving along.

Hello and welcome :)
I would think your nursing experience alone would be more than enough to get you into NZ, let alone your qualifications. best of luck with the decision making :)

Yep from Peebles - was having a very uncreative day when chose user-name :) Fantastic part of the world and we've spend many a weekend camping round the Borders :yes

Our process did go rather quickly mainly (I think) cos OH had job offer and we had already collected an awful lot of the paperwork beforehand.. Although in saying that the main thing that held us up was sadly the house sale :(

All the best

Hi and welcome Simpsons,
Peebles is dead right, with a job offer you can have PR within weeks of submitting your ITA. I'm a nurse, we were here 6 months after the job interview. If I can help with anything, let me know.
Good luck!

Unless one of you is an axe murderer, with qualifications and your age and experience they should snap you up. Give it a go on your own first before you fork out for the kind of advice we're queueing/queuing/waiting in line to help you out with on here. All you need is nerves of steel, an ability to watch paint dry and the ability to fill in a stupidly complicated form Until recently, relatives on a pacific island would have helped but apparently not any more!

Best of luck and bear in mind that there are a huge number of us here who are still wondering how we did it!

Hi, in case you haven't found them already here's a link to the NZ Immigration website http://www.immigration.govt.nz/ and the points calculator http://www.immigration.govt.nz/pointsindicator/.

Definitely give it a try yourself, I wouldn't have thought you'd have any problems. Do you know whereabouts in NZ you want to be? A friend and fellow forumite (Leachio) was a nurse for a hospice here in Hamilton (before she returned to UK). She's on holiday at the moment but you could try getting in touch with her in a couple of weeks.

Good luck with the rollercoaster ride that is immigration.

Hi snailandthewhale
I would love to know the pay scales i am currently at the top of band 6 so roughly earn about 32K per annun is it realistice to think i could get something similar as i would be looking for a senior position Advanced CNS or even nurse consultant level. Also do you think it would be worthwhile doing a prescribing course before coming i have avoided sp far but might be worthwhile now!!!
