Not sure if anyone knows the answer to this, I have emailed NZIS twice but got nothing back!
If I were to gain WTR via an accredited employer i.e. a Talent Visa, is there any reason stopping me applying for PR separately during this period?
I know I would need further medicals and police checks and spend more money on applying etc, but is there any reason why this is not possible?
Thanks
Alan

It's the route we are currently taking - all I know is that it says you can't apply for PR until you've been working for 24 months. No other reason than that afaics.

If you have sufficient points to apply for a PR then you can apply for it at any time, even if you already have a WTR. There is no reason that you have to wait for 24 months first if you don't want to.
We did exactly this, we arrived on a WTR and then applied for PR once in NZ.
If you have enough points for the PR though, you should try your best to go that route instead as it will be the simplest / cheapest way of doing it. The only reason to go the WTR route under this scenario is to get to NZ quickly.
Note that the reason why it says you have to wait 24 months on a WTR is for those people who couldn't qualify for a PR on points in the first place, in which case you get a PR because you have been in the country working for 24 months.

Cheers Ian, that's what I thought but just couldn't get any confirmation. We will get certified copies of the current police checks and medicals, should I land a WTR visa and then we will apply straight away as I have exactly 100 point minimum when a job offer/being in work.
Thanks again.

Another one for you Ian I guess, am I right in thinking that getting certified copies of everything medical and police check wise will allow us to submit for PR once WTR is in place? Or do we need to get anything re-done again?
Thanks

I'm not sure on the process exactly Alan, I think possibly that NZIS may be able to just reference the documents you have already submitted if they are still in their valid time, definitely would not be able to submit copies certified or otherwise of medicals though I wouldn't think as they need to be submitted as original.

I'm assuiming you are suggesting to get certified copies of your medical and police certificate that you submit for your WTR and re-use them for your PR application.
Ok, this is more difficult to answer and be sure to be correct.
As you probably know, medicals are valid for upto 3 months and police certificates are valid for upto 6 months.
When we were going through the process, we asked the same question to NZIS and they told us that if you had already submitted documents for another visa and they are still valid then you do not need to have them re-done as they could just take the ones already lodged with them. So if this was correct then you wouldn't even need certified copies to re-submit.
However, if you look on the medical form it clearly states that for a PR you need a new medical regardless of whether the original one is still valid.
So my current understanding is that you would have to re-do the medical no matter what, and if the police certificate you could just refer them back to it.
It should be noted that all the above may not matter anyway as you have low points so may take some time to be selected, and then it may take some time for your ITA to be received so it is highly likely that the medical will have expired regardless of if they would have still allowed it. You may be luckier with the police certificate but I suspect not.
Hope that hasn't confused you too much :confused

No that's good Ian, I guess for completeness I'll call NZIS. Looking at the draw though as long as you have over 100 points and are either in employment or have an offer of employment they are the first ones out every time with the high scoring ones every time.

I talked with NZIS this morning and one of my questions was can my medical and police check from WTR be sent back to me so that I can then add it later to the ITA. I was told that they do not send back the originals, but that they will transfer any documents requested to the branch that would be dealing with my ITA. I am hoping that this is correct and I won't have to do another medical...I'd rather spend the money to go to a rugby match!

Yep, that's the same as we were told but in our case it took us/them too long to get everything together so it had expired anyway so had to be re-done so can't say for sure that it would be accepted.
If you look at the Medical & Chest X-Ray Certificate - Applicant's Notes it says:-
What if I submitted a medical certificate with my last application?
If you are applying for residence you will need to submit a new medical certificate.
Which does seem to contradict what is being said by NZIS.
