Great news regarding GST

Customs have changed the ruling so that your status is now taken on the date the goods arrive and not your actual arrival date into NZ. This now means you can arrive on a visitors visa and providing you get your residency or work permits prior to your goods arrival date you will not pay GST (unless you declare new items etc)
Even better news is that anyone who has paid GST since the change in November 07 and would have met the above critera could quite possibly be in line for a refund. Suggest you contact NZ customs or your removal company/broker to discuss this.
This change was probably pushed through very quickly due to the amount of complaints NZ customs were receiving from people affected by the ruling not to mention the removal companies and customs brokers.

Hi, and welcome to the forum.
Have you got some official information on this e.g. a link to a website as the customs website still lists the old rule. Have you got a date when this rule comes into force?

Hi Ian
Start date is today, 06th June 2008.
NZ customs sent out a release yesterday to some removal companies and brokers but in true customs style it is hardly what you would call official. It was on non letter head and not dated. Kinda like when they bought in the new ruling last November with about two weeks notice.......
I presume it will take them awhile to update the website.

The customs site has been changed now (http://www.customs.govt.nz/travellers/Household+Effects/When+No+Customs+Charges+Apply.htm). This is what it says:
When No Customs Charges Apply
Eligibility
Your household or other related effects (excluding motor vehicles, boats and aircraft) will qualify for concessionary entry, i.e. free of duty and exempt GST, for a reasonable time after you arrive in New Zealand, provided you can meet all of the following conditions.
Conditions
You have arrived and on the date the effects are imported, hold a document authorising residence in New Zealand; and
You have resided or lived outside New Zealand for the whole of the 21 months before the date of your arrival in New Zealand; and
You have owned and used the goods before the date of your departure for New Zealand; and
The goods are for your own personal use and not intended for any other person or persons or for gift, sale or exchange.

Yep, they were a little slow at the update.
Sure plenty of people will be glad of this news.
