We are moving in mid July from Oregon to Christchurch and are looking for a reputable and not too ridiculously expensive moving company - think that we will need a 40' container, prepared to pack/unpack it ourselves to save money.
Has anyone got any recommendations or advice.
Thanks David

Here is a site that may help with your search for an International Mover from USA.

Hope this helps,

Suzanne.

Crown Worldwide Movers
(my dad has worked for them for 27 years!)

Good luck with the move!

Laser International.

Not sure where they are in the US, but we used them from the Midwest and we opted for them to pack us all. Not one breakage. Well worth it! :nice1

Have heard good things about Crown, too, from the UK at least. :)

I used Crown Moving Co. out of Seattle (part of Unigroup/Mayflower, I dunno if they are related to aforementioned Crown, though) when I moved SEA-CHC in March. They were a bit uncommunicative on the status of my shipment, but I was able to bargain down a bit on the price, the shipment arrived earlier than advertised, and I have yet to locate any damage. Their agents on this side were The Moving Company - I think there might have been some negative posts in the past but I found them quite accommodating and helpful. Just my two cents (Swedish rounded down to $0.00)...

I used Rainier but learned the hard way your move is only as good as the crew that shows up that day - on either side.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all of the good information - we are busy calling companies and getting quotes - need to make a decision this weekend!
Cheers David

We used Ranier, and I was very happy with the USA side of things. But I would never, under any circumstances reccomend NZ Van Lines who dealt with this side. It may be that Ranier does not have to deal with them though, I'm not sure they are the only contracted company, and anyone the Wellington office was who I was unhappy with. The Chch people may be fine. They did let us pack/unpack ourselves and it did save money. Are you sure you need a 40'? We used a 20 foot for our 4 bedroom house. I notice people using 40 footers more if they need a car in the shipment too.

Has anyone from the US cut out the middle man and gone straight to the freight forwarders? I realize there are additional concerns going that route (insurance, self-packing, etc) but I'm guessing there could be quite a bit of savings involved.
