Just a quick question,
Is it cheaper to buy new items in NZ eg Garden spades/forks/rakes etc, than have the existing ones examined by MAF?
Can someone give me examples of how much their MAF fees were, for such items,
Thanks

From what I recall you pay for inspection per box inspected and it gives the charges on the maf website somewhere. If your garden tools are packed in one box (nicely cleaned of course!) you should be charged minimum inspection fees provided that is all they want to look at. We brought all ours and are glad we did.

We cleaned all ours and brought them.
The only extra charge was for an additional lawnmower clean which cost us about $60. Given that the mower cost £600 and was only two years old, seems worth it.
If you have room, I would say bring them and pack stuff together that might warrant inspection.

We put all our garden, BBQ stuff , sporting equipment into one big box and that was the only box inspected. As mentioned by others, its a moneysaver, but I think quality is sometimes an issue too, as our gardenspades etc are of very good quality and to get something equivelant here would be very expensive. You can get cheap ones but they don't last long. So yes I think its worth bringing them.

We shipped through Crown who cover the MAF fees. They witheld about 4 of our boxes to inspect - and also a very large motorbike. Everything passed with no problem at all (we had cleaned it all thoroughly) and it was really simple - much easier than we had feared.

Same here...we thoroughly cleaned all our garden stuff, including a set of outdoor plant pots. they all got packed together....were all inspected by MAF, and passed no problem at all. MAF fees are often not as high as people are lead to believe....I think we paid $190....and that included inspecting all our outdoor stuff, tents, herbs & spices, wicker/seagrass furniture etc.....it's was only about £70. That would barely have covered the cost of a couple of decent quality garden spades, let alone anything else.
