Currently in the design stage for a new build.

I work in IT/electronics so understand the likes of ethernet, routers, switches, IP, IGMP.... and used to work in professional video area also so appreciate a good picture....and have a pretty good hifi.

Currently trying to decide on options for getting audio, video, data, telephone round the new house. Very dubious about most of the things I've come across so far. Also need to decide on home automation.

I do not indend sending my hi-fi signal down a cat-5 twisted pair and don't like the thought of having telephone/data on the same set of cables.
Perfectly fine for most people I guess, but sad engineer.....!

If anyone out there has gone into this and is willing to share an offline discussion on the technicalities of what they did/are considering then please PM me.

Thanks

Yup we do that kind of install at work, :) and as both an Electrician and a sound engineer i feel your dilemma. I am a certified Clipsal installer.

Have you seen Lexcom? http://www.lexcom.com.au/ (download brochure)
Or Clipsals Starserve or c-bus? http://www.clipsal.com.au/consumer/downloads/brochures (near bottom page)

You really wouldn't notice the difference of data/comms down same cable unless your getting into gigabit speeds around your house? Audio and video as you say are not great down a Cat 5e, We have used Cat 7 for audio / video but would recommend proper RF and coax cables.

The two major brands above have so many different options of outlets, cables and baluns (although there bad idea really) that something would fit your plans.

Drop me a PM

Home automation / building management system? Clipsal C Bus is great. Control all your lighting, heating, power etc from a central system. Touch screens, LCD displays on light switches, lighting level control, scene setting, PC interface, the limit is your imagination.

Around house audio? Clipsal again, with Clipsal Marpa. Multiple input, multiple output, remote control.... blah blah blah.

If you want to know anymore about it, PM me, yet another Clipsal Installer in the Village (South Island).....
