Just to be very sure....I have my residence permit and my first RRV, both have ages left on them. If I leave the country for a holiday (a week or so), and come back, what's the process for coming through customs? Do you join the New Zealand/Australia line? When you get to the desk, do you need to produce anything other than your RRV in your passport?

Still haven't done it myself, but I'm sure that you are correct that you go through the NZ line.
I'm sure that you know, but as soon as you leave NZ your permit will expire and on return you will be granted a new permit.

You just go through the NZ/Aus line and give them your passport. As soon as you leave the country, your current IRRV expires and gets renewed automatically when you return to NZ, provided it's still current of course ;)

Funny process this. Just got my son's passport renewed and had to go to get another RRV. ($100) But this RRV only lasts for 12 months as opposed to the original one when we got PR which is for 2 years. But, as we have been here 15 months now, the next RRV will be the indefinite one anyway.....
You can come and go as many times as you like as long as the visa is current. And yes, you do join the (much shorter) NZ/AUS line :)

Not trying to hijack this thread or anything, but when you enter the country for the first time with the residency stickers, which line then? :uhoh
Many thanks

Just like to clarify that you would have an RRV or an IRRV which do NOT expire as soon as you leave the country. These remain current and are what allows you to fly back to NZ, if they expired then you would be stuck at your destination.
It is the permit that is only valid whilst you are in NZ and expires as soon as you leave.
When you return to NZ a new permit will be provided that matches your visa type so for an RRV you would again be granted a residence permit.
I'm sure that's what Jen meant :nice1

Yes absolutely Ian :p
When I cam back from Europe, I even got a "Welcome Home" bit from the border officer, it was quite amusing :laugh

Cool, thanks everyone.
When you get the new permit on re-entry, is it just a stamp? I don't imagine that they print out a blue sticker for you...
