Any recommendations for a nice white wine and a nice red wine?

Something very light and easy to drink, readily available from a supermarket. Also as its on the school's money, not too pricey.

Cheers

I have been into Pino Gris since I arrived this year. I try to buy the better brands when they are on 'speeeeshal' at the supermarket but my fav brands are Shingle Peak, Church Road and Mills Reef.

Have you been to the Mills Reef winery in Bethlehem? We had a great tasting session there last year and they had some really nice wines (inc Port which I have never tasted before)

I can concur that the Church Road offerings are generally pretty good 'middle of the road' wines.

Noticed that cartons of Banrock Station were all on offer at New World earlier in the week....never had one that wasn't drinkable.

Oh yes, Banrock Station - that's a good 'drinking wine' too.

I'm gonna shut up now otherwise I'll just go "yep, drunk that one" every time.

I'm not an alcie, honest! At least not these days.

If you're buying in bulk for a school function it may be worth contacting the Wine Society and going along for a tasting before you buy. Often cheaper to buy by the case from them, than from a supermarket, even when the wine is on special.
(They often have offers on VoucherMate too, so worth checking.)

At the risk of lowering the tone, Corbans White Label is usually very quaffable and usually on offer too :D I have just opened a Cab Merlot which is going down very nicely and their whites are pretty reasonable too.

We generally try and get NZ wines on special, like the Corbans gil mentioned, or the Montanas or Riverstones are nice too!

I tried a Hardy's "Non-vintage" red the other day, as it was cheap. Must say it was horrendous, and I don't consider myself very "particular" about my wine!

I'm not there and haven't tasted enough to make a suggestion, don't know about pricing either, but you can probably check this http://www.nzwine.com/competitions/ and this http://www.taste.co.nz/Home/Howto/HowToDetails/tabid/192/ArticleID/1664/Default.aspx

I thought it only proper that I should do some research - so tonight I'm working my way through three reds ....

The first is a cheapie I bought yesterday at New World in Bishopdale, Chch - cost $6.99 - Corbans White Label Cabernet Merlot 2006. Very quaffable - already been devoured... bargain...

The second is a Banrock Station, Cab/Sav, one of our fav cheapies - although we can't beat $6.99 as ours was $7.50 at our local Taeges Four Square local supermarket (it's usually about $10.80-$12) so I guess we saved on petrol ;)

The third is in the kitchen and if I am still awake I might open it later :p

I love this quaffable thread. Is it cheap? Check. Is it drinkable? Check. Then it's a winner. We can leave aside the bouquet of cloves and hint of raspberry leaf, and just get down to business. :)

I refuse to pay more than $5.99 for the cheapies. Countdown often sell them for that price so when I see them I buy 6 or more. In fact when a new Countdown opened recently they had Hardies at $4.99 so I stocked up.

I now have more than 50 cheapies in the 'cellar' plus 10 or so decent ones for special occasions. :cheers

Meant to say thanks for all the suggestions!

Had the meeting a couple of nights ago, went with a red Banrock Station, which was a hit and a White Hardys, not as popular but still did the job! :D

Cheers

My OH is also into the Pino Gris, likes the Shingle Peak, but the current favourite is Spy Valley (on special of course).

Hi

Brown Brothers - Syrah & Dolcetto. I'm not a big red wine drinker, but this is a must! The best red I have ever quaffed. :laugh

Agree, I like that too :D. I think I recommended it on a thread Tia started ages ago, about what to include in a basket of goodies!
