We had such a lucky escape last night (dont worry, we wernt in physical danger)
We are looking for an unfurnished house to rent for about a year while we sort things out with the house in England. In chch, Weds and Sat are the best days in the paper for rentals, so on Weds we narrowed down some houses we were interested in, and arranged to drive by. This narrowed the selection down to two, so last night we arranged with the agent to view a house in Beckenham. On driving by the house seemed perfect. Freshly painted with a nice size garden, in a nice quiet street, not far from the girls schools and near to the Cashmere hills. We turned up for the viewing and there were another couple fo girls there who were also viewing. The house was just as lovely on the inside. Freshly painted, nice size rooms, Full bath and quite nice kitchen (not the best weve seen, but certainly not the worst). Paul gave me the nod, :yes and then disappeared into the garden, while i chased the agent to try and express our interest before the other two. So, there we are, the agent and I, in the kitchen. He is facing me with his back to the window, and I am facing the window able to see Paul in the garden chating with the current tennant. I have literally just finished saying to him "we would really like to go for this place" when I glance up to see Paul shaking his head :no So I take the registration form from the agent, and tell him I'll just go and confirm a few details with Paul. In the garden, Pauls says come on lets go. So the next thing the agent knows is me shouting from the kitchen, "we are just off now, I'll give you a call".
It turns out that the house has absolutely no heating (which we had found out from the agent), and is full of damp. The tenant went as far as to say that by no means would he recommend having children in the house. This probably explains why the house was freshly painted with a couple of new carpets. He also appeared to have the neighbours from hell
I have to say, with the wonderfull gift of hindsight, that the agent did not look too pleased when the tenant turned up as we were viewing.
How lucky were we :nice1
