Just brought emergency wind-up radio/torch with flybuys points yesterday for our emergency box. We just spent last half hour listening (well sort of "listening" for me) to the radio before I was thinking how I know this radio is suitable for my children under 5 years old listening to it. (Just some of you didn't realise, I am hearing impaired, so I can't hear what the person actually say :o). So can you help me out on which stations and which is their numbers, so I ensure they got right one?
THANK YOU

Sophia, got to be careful which stations here, can't help with under fives, but older kids get to hear some pretty racey stuff on some channels. Hardly the BBC!

Thanks for warning, Steve :o
What I did in the end, pretend the power in radio has run out and explain only daddy can wind them up so I better to put it away and anyway how about listen to Gruffalo collection we got in CDs, lucky they accept it...phew.

Good plan. I am constantly surprised by what is allowed to be said on the radio here at times when kids are in the car going to and from school.

Even the adverts can provoke some 'interesting' questions.

We can only get the Edge station in our car and have had to quickly turn it off when some of the more racy adverts for helping men with those 'special cuddles' come on :D

Karen - do you have a Japanese import as they have problems receiving stations on the stereos but there is a way round it...

Thanks everyone for info, I feel like prat there :o

For some reasons, kids decided they are fed up of gruffalo and now want to play Andrew lloyds webber's phantom of the opera!!!! WHAT?...do your children have any unusual request on music?

My kids have really got into a lot of the kiwi bands since arriving - I guess because they see them a lot on C4 and hear them on the radio:

Scribe; Shihad; Opshop etc.

When younger Joe used to really like Pink (the singer, not the colour).

Not that unusual really. At least compared to Mr Lloyd Webber anyway.

I'm still amazed I wasn't quizzed further when asked by the kids what 'adult toys' were after a radio ad. Got away with the response "toys for adults, obviously"

My 'favourite one' is the one about something happening prematurely (a male issue), and the ad for men with 'direction issues.'

Took me forever to explain those. I'm sure the child went straight on to relate all his knowledge to the rest of the playground, and all the other parents are now wondering about our dinner table conversations...

You should try Coast, Sophia, no swearing, no dodgy ads, no inappropriate "jokes" and they even play some Lloyd Webber.........

Know what you mean. when my oldest was 3 and youngest was born, she was really interested in placentas and umbilical cords(no idea why??)...she spent the best part of week telling all the other kids at her pre-school all about it before the subject got boring, and I don't think the other parents were very impressed....although staff thought it was very amusing :o

We usually listen to classic hits 97.4....there is the occasional swear word, but luckily kids don't notice.

Yes I remember when my boy was into Pink so we obliged and downloaded the album for him to play. So much swearing in there that we told him the computer lost it. I hate it when artists release singles then the album is so different especially when they add all the swearing. No need!.

can you use a DAB radio in NZ?

Seems like we've stumbled onto a NZ / rest of world divide.

Some language that is regarded as swear words in some jurisdictions are in common use here in NZ. If this is a major concern to you, then you may want to question if a place where that happens is where you want to be.

Steve

Sadly not, I've a dab radio player as part of my separate stereo stack system that's no use here. Wish I'd sold it back in the UK.

Don't think we have been discussing being offended by it just don't really want my 6 and 3 year old repeating it all over the playground/kindy :D Personally having been brought up just outside Glasgow every other word is a sweary one so you'd have to pretty far to offend me with bad language :laugh
