How does one land a teaching job in Auckland before arriving? Is it easy to get a permanent one?
We need to be there by May 2009 and my hubby is a qualified Secondary School Teacher but it seems like teaching jobs/interviews are not easy to come by nor are they willing to hire someone over the phone.
He did one telephone interview and that was a near miss.
As for me, I have not worked for 2 years since giving birth. Have a Masters of Arts (Communications) degree from Australia and my last job was in PR. Would it be easy or not too much trouble for me to get a job in PR/media/journalism? How much experience does one need?

Look at the vacancies in the Education Gazette (Google it) and you'll see all the vacancies on offer. I got my job on a video link interview. Get your CV up together and a letter of application. They tend not to do application forms. E-mail the schools on the off-chance (they like a tryer!) Best of luck!

Thanks....we've done all that and are just waiting on replies, if any. It is just the endless waiting and waiting that is probably stressing us now.
After hearing scores of stories from recent migrants and coming migrants who are going there with job offers already in hand....doesn't help the motivation of those who are still job searching and fear the unknown. Congrats to those who already have jobs.....keeps the rest of us on our toes. ;)
The gazette currently has few vacancies since it isn't the optimum time for teaching vacancies. We have some assistance in the form of a recommendation from his principal but the school is in Wellington. A place we haven't thought of going.
I am holding my breathe since I've submitted a few cvs to some firms in Auckland but given the time (8 months) I don't think firms would be hiring that far ahead or consider my experience as valid in NZ. Still, I don't find getting work in other media-related jobs and even willing to accept peanuts pay for some gain in experience.
Just want to see if any migrants knows the ins-out of getting a media-related job in NZ.......

HI
What does he teach? Does make a difference if he teaches a core subject it's easy to get over with a job before you land.
My partner (English, media, drama) teacher got offered 3 jobs before she came, nothing happend for 6 months then she had 3 offers, she is however an amazing teacher, she loves teaching and it comes across when people meet and interview her.
Contact Oasis education, (agency) they are awsome believe me if anyone can get your partner a job they can. They even have headmasters fly to the uk to interview, we saw 3 prinicipals in london for interviews and all were in decile 6 and above good schools.
my misses has been in the school for 4 months and already she has been promoted to assistant to the head of year (2nd in command if you like) she has only been teaching for 3 years. there should be no reason why he couldn't get a job before he comes over. We did and plenty more we know did, the schools are full of english, s african and american teachers, more so than kiwi.

That sounds fantastic for your partner. Glad she is happy and found her niche. Will check out Oasis since it seems like a promising lead. THANKS!
Both of us are Singaporeans.
My hubby has more than 10 years teaching in Physics (age 17-18) Cambridge 'A' Levels. Now he is teaching Science (age 13-14) in the I.B. system. It may sound like a sought-after teaching field but we haven't had any callbacks or emails.
