Dammit!

I have a low platelet count! says mine was 134 and limit was 140! I am trying to get it done at my GP as suggested by the immigration doctor.

Its just soo frustrating because I had funny protein counts for a while and now thats gone this pops up!

Sorry to hear that, what a pain. At least you don't have to fast for 14 hrs before taking the blood though :D

Oh no! Can this cause problems with the medical? My platelets are always low, but I've never required any special medical care for it (although needed closer monitoring whilst pregnant).

On the other hand DH has a very high platelet count and has been sourced by the blood donor service to make special donations - NZ won't allow UK immigrants to become donors though, which is a huge shame.

Can't recommend anything to bring your levels up I'm afraid - if I knew of any I wouldn't have the levels I've got.

Good luck with the re-test

Dammit! My repeat test done a week later has improved to 137 from 134! but still not at the pass mark. It also coincides with me getting over my horrific cold. So fingers crossed I will only need one more test or the Immigration doctor will see its on the rise and use her discretion.

Alchohol is a blood thinner so it will decrease your platelets. So if you're drinking lately, don't! Give some time to build your platelets back up. High fat and protein foods are said to increase blood thickness so that may help.
Good luck on the retest, you're so close!

Yeah alcohol may have had something to do with it as I had a bit of a bender the week before each of the tests (end of uni partying). I have not drunk since so I should be ok if I was tested now.

Thanks for the advice

Andy

Not knowing your medical history and with all other caveats, your next test should be fine judging by the results you've posted. Alcohol won't influence your platelet count in the short term so don't worry too much about that. Ask whoever takes your blood to either take it without the tourniquet on or to loosen it and wait a while once the needle is in the vein. A tourniquet applied too tightly can change the platelet count quite radically.

Good luck with the next test.

Does anyone know if taking Warfarin is a problem with the medical? I had a pulmonary embolus after surgery and have been on warfarin for 2 years.
