The reason for me being so quiet lately is that i really havent had a lot to say........playing the waiting game, house sale, application for PR.

Well the dreaded letter arrived today to tell me that the NZ Medical Advisor has stated that my BMI is too high and would recommend non acceptance...oh hum.

Next stop applying for a medical waiver. My BMI is too high to even contemplate losing enough to ensure it is 35 or under it would probably kill me in the process so dont really have a choice. Having been a large build all my life I can truly say that I am fitter than the average person ...... this has also been stated by folk i work with who are considered "normal" size but are couch potatoes. Because of the NZIS structure on this subject i will have to supply further information or give reasons for being accepted for PR. Will keep you informed of progress.

Sorry to hear that Catt. Even if you were expecting it, it is still very disheartening. Hopefully you will get the waiver very soon. Does make it a stressful journey though so have some cyber hugs to keep you going.

Sorry Catt, I think that the medical part was the worse bit of the progress. Good luck with the medical waiver

Catt,

So sorry to hear your news, as you know i am in the same boat.
Paperwork sent to NZ Medical Advisor last Tuesday, just a waiting game now.

Regarding Waiver, hope you dont mind me asking what is the procedure.

I know it wont help, but sending you a big hug

As Mels said - even if expected it is still a blow. Good luck with the waiver - you have my number if you want a whinge :yes

this BMI thing is a bit misleading really as apparently most rugby players are classed as medically obese! I play squash with a friend who is 22 stone and 6ft 2, is asthmatic with a BMI of over 40 and kicks my ass all over the place.

oh dear, poor Catt.

hope the waiver route works out for you.

Let me know how it goes. :(
I'll probably be doing the same thing myself.
After losing 60lbs last year I haven't been able to lose any more despite upping my exercise and doing everything I can think of to get me out of any plateau. One would think that 2-3 hours of continuous exercise and extra sessions throughout the day would do something. Something other than make me hot all the time and tired enough to nap! :laugh
But hey, my waist is almost within guidelines. Maybe that will count for something?
Let me know how the medical waiver process goes. I'm feeling like I ought to start writing one before I have my medicals. :roll

Just had the same conversation with our insurance broker last night. OH's insurance premiums will reecieve an additional 50% loading due to her BMI.

Just stupid.

There should be some form of measurement of general fitness, as pointed out in the rugby player example, using BMI is no fair measure at all.

Good luck.

It's a nightmare this BMI thing and a very limited measure which seems to be used in isolation in most cases - incredibly unhelpful :( All the best with it Catt and hope you get more positive news soon :)

Hi,
I have the same problem as Catt.
Paperwork sent to NZ Medical Advisor last Tuesday, just a waiting game now.
Letter from GP stating that I have no medical problems, letter of Gym showing my weight lose, letter of personal trainer and finally a letter of my employer showing the no of days I have had of sick over the last 7 years.

Did you oh have to get a wavier?

Thanks everyone for your words of support...........got the weekend put aside to write a letter requesting the waiver. Apparently thats whats needed providing any further details I can and the reasons why I should be granted the medical waiver. I saved my sickness record from work (no sick days for the last 2 years, 2 days the year before) just for this moment as ammunition because i have already laid my soul (and everything else) bare.

My understanding is that my case officer will supply my file to a Level 1 officer (high flyer and hopefully with the experience and compassion) who will go through it and make the decision from all of the information provided and then send me a letter. If i dont get through that, then its an appeal and if that fails it will go to the Home Office in Wellington for assessment. There is another strand left after that I believe which i will read up on just in case it gets that far and let you all know it may be useful to others also.

I feel really bad for my hubby he is so looking forward to going home and although he is saying "its ok love" it doesnt really help....:(

all the best I might be heading the same way but not for my BMI BUT LOW blood levels ! news to me - thats what working hard does to you

its very stressful - we have just posted ITA - so we shall see

I have to agree the UK is obsessed with BMI AND to me the figures do not make sense - my husband is obese boarder line ( we did laugh ) he does a manual job and does not look overweight but is muscular on the arms ( think popeye )

best of luck

If it's any consolation (which it won't be!!), during my nurse training one of my lecturer's told us that the BMI measurement wasn't accurate as it was originally based on the height/weight ratio of teenage kids and the figures have never been adjusted. Not sure how true this is but it does make sense. :yes

Had a mail today when i got home from my case officer to say:

"I am pleased to advise you that a medical waiver has been granted in your case, I am currently finishing assessment of your file.
You should hear from me in 2-3 weeks.

Kind regards,"

I have read it over and over again and still don't believe it can i have some :raebananaplease.
Had to copy and paste it in here to let everyone know and also to get it into my head that its true. Hubby is over the moon and its a bottle of bubbly on ice at the moment to celebrate............woooooohooooooo
