Hi all

Assuming we're fortunate enough to get PR by our plan date of November/December of this year, we've noticed that our UK passports expire in November 2010... is there a limited life you need to have on your passports when sending them off for the magical Blue Stickers

Thanks :nice1

Hi,

Can't remember the minimum allowed but it's about 3 years. I'm sure someone will remember shortly.
If I were you and had the time before NZIS need your passports, I would get new ones. So much simpler than changing in 2010.

Not as far as I am aware, we sent our passports off for the stickers, not noticing that one of my son's passports expired just a year later. It was quite simple to update it.

after getting the new passport, we had to take it to new zealand house, with the old one, pay £40 and 1/2 hour later the visa had been transferred.

Found it at last. :)

It was in the letter we received with our ITA and said:

'Passports must be valid for at least 12 months from the date that the visas are issued and be in good condition.'

Knew I'd seen something somewhere but my brain has turned to soup recently :roll

As others have said, they need to still be valid for at least 12 months.

It would be worth checking out how much it costs to renew them now (and losing a year or so) compared to renewing them in NZ later as I have heard that renewing them in NZ is expensive (haven't had to do it yet) so it may actually save you some time and money to change them early. Also as said before, if you get a new passport then you have to pay to transfer the visa to the new passport as well.

I would renew now rather than having the hassle from NZ. One less thing to worry about for ages too.

Thanks everyone for the advice... reckon we'll apply for new ones then towards the end of summer/early autumn... like BBB says, one less thing to worry about when in NZ :nice1

Definitely renew them now - charges for overseas renewals are utterly astronomical!

That way you can also avoid the hassle of getting your stickers transferred.

And cost - think it was 40 dollars to peel the stamps off and restick :roll

Ours were due for renewal in January 2010. I've already renewed mine as we were originally hoping to go next year and I wanted it out of the way. I also wanted to change my driving licence to a photo card one and that only costs £10 if you have an up to date photo available on the passport office computers.

You get to keep 9 months of your current passport so won't lose as much as you thought.

Just watch out for nosy post office workers if you decide to use the check and send service.
