now before I start I am not that well up on computers and need to wait a few years until my kids are so you will need to spell it out
we have a laptop ( replaced computer last nov ) thought it could go hand baggage . it i s not wireless at the moment but can be ! if that makes sense .
Is it better to buy router this end - due to cost and if so which are compatable - I am sure some will not be . I just think it is one less thing to worry about at the other end when the stress levels are a bit lower ( they could not get much higher ) so we can go to the beach , instead of every weekend doing the house etc :o

I brought my router with but it wasn't suitable for here because I have cable internet as opposed to ADSL. Unless you buy one with both capabilities to cover you for whatever you end up with here. Yes they are about double the price over here so your choice.
Just one point for you to note. Router here is pronounce 'rowter' cos the word 'rooter' has sexual connotations. I learned the embarrassing way in an electrical store here when I asked for a good 'rooter'!!

People with ADSL routers do not always have to replace them when they get cable. Sometimes you can connect the cable system to one of the 4 Ethernet ports , and call that the WAN.
However, if your system wont let you set that port as a WAN port, it means you wont have a firewall. Thats not a good idea.
Some people only have one LAN port on their ADSL modem. These you have to replace.

If you aren't vey computer savy, then I would wait till you get to NZ.
The broadband suppliers provide the modem / router as part of the connection package e.g. for Telecom, see Modems and Equipment (https://www.telecom.co.nz/broadband/select/1,10627,205730-204473,00.html?action=/modem&link=rdt) for details.
Notice that a wired modem is free and the wireless one is subsidised to only NZ$100.
And the best thing of all, is that as it's their kit, they will be able to help you should you get into difficulty setting it up.

If you take your router, know which packing box it's in. Our stuff was delivered 3 weeks and I've been through every one of 388 bits of packing and still haven't found it, hence my purchase this very morning of a $119.95 router from the nice people at Slingshot.
I hate unpacking.
