Hi everyone I was recently researching how the internet plans work in NZ. I know in the US I have broadband for $20 USD a month. My internet here is very fast and I can use it all I want and download unlimited data etc... I see in NZ Telecom has a offer for 3GB for $39.00 NZD but what does that mean? I never heard of a certain amount of GB for internet usage. What would be a good plan for someone who doesnt want to be restricted on internet usage in NZ? Thanks in advance :)

Hi
We are not in NZ yet, have to wait 2 years for son to finish university.
I am also interested in the broadband costs as we use ours all the time in England. Is 3Gigs for a week or for a month, at the moment we have 8gigs for a month for £29 a month in England.

Unfortunately for those of you in the US, most broadband plans in NZ and Aus have a capped monthly download limit. Higher usage plans are available, for example I can use 20GB per month, and if I use more than that my bandwidth drops down to 64Kbps (approx equal to dail-up speed). However, this has never happened and I'm a fairly constant user.
Anyway, search around and do your research. I'm with Vodafone, and got a fairly good deal on a package including home phone and Internet. I think this is quite common with most providers.
Good luck.

We use the internet everyday - my boys use it for xbox live too. What would be a reasonably good package sixe?At eh moment we are unlimited but not sure if 3GB or more would be enough? Any ideas??

For general web browsing, email & games then 3GB should be enough. However, if it's used to download any music or movies, YouTube, or extensive use of Skype, then you should look at increasing the limit.
It might be a good idea to see if you can find out from your current provider how much you typically use, that should give you an idea of what you need.

Well, you'll find internet here a bit of a shock.
I'm with Orcon Internet, and and I have an uncapped plan, meaning "I can use it all I want and download unlimited data etc". However each 5GB of data costs me $10...
Its fast enough for my purposes, but I don't know exactly what that means.
Most plans in NZ are limited, as described above by vitalogy.
I will say this though - now the kids have left home I'm saving about $20-$30 a month on internet bills :)

We are with Telecom and have 3GB which so far seems to be absolutely plenty. We don't download films or music though - so maybe if you ar into that you would need more.

Unfortunately New Zealand must rate as one of the world places worldwide to get broadband. It makes the UK look positively cheap.
I have a friend in Moscow who is on a 20 meg unlimited connection for about $50 NZ a month. My work colleague has a very similar package in the UK for about the same price. I purposely stuck with an existing slower package so I don't get too annoyed when I emigrate.
From my NZ experience (in 2005) its not particularly fast, and it is severely limited in data transfers. If I were to replicate my download patterns from the UK when I move to NZ later this year I would probably need a second job to pay for it.
I'll just have to spend more time outdoors :D

An unlimited speed upload/download Internet plan with a 20g data cap would cost approx $70 per month in NZ. An unlimited speed download/128k upload Internet plan with a 20g data cap would cost approx $54 per month.
Unfortunately actual speeds can vary from 200kbs-4mbs depending on your location and provider.
Hopefully if the government and ISPs implement their plans for the next few years speeds should improve. . .

The point here would be that even a 20 gig cap could be restricting to anyone used to an unlimited tariff. If the BBC Iplayer is rolled out to non-UK addresses, I can see that being an issue.

I'm with WorldXchange www.xnet.co.nz and can recommend the service. I pay $34 a month for the connection and then $1 per Gb for downloads. My bill fluctuates each month but at least I don't have to watch my usage. It is line speed down, and 128k upload. The data cost is the same as the capped plans, so it's win - win.
