Hi
We have been looking at builders showhomes and were wondering if anyone has had any dealings with 'Homes with distinction' in Christchurch. I like their designs but haven't really heard of them. Any other recommendations for builders would be welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Helen, I just gave brochure about builders in canterbury areas to Family of Monkey. I can try and see if I can get another for you from local friends if you want one.

Really interesting & worth having :nice1....was suprised how many of the companies advertising in brochure we Brits!! We have decided to wait until we get down there before deciding on builder (even if means renting for longer), as cost per m2 priced are going down alot now (despite somone posting few months ago that I was greedy expecting that) in order to be more competitive with market value of properties (and less huge profits for larger building companies).

As well as all the usual larger building companies (we are waiting to see which ones go out of business in current conditions) we really like what we are seeing about Hansen McFarlane Builders...they have a showhome in Ashburton apparently. We are also really interested in Golden Homes (so far only been to showhome in Auckland).....they seem to do higher spec insulation etc as standard in most of their builds compared to other big companies and they are still cheaper.....we understand this is because their interior fixtures and fittings are less fancy (better quality, but basic ones). But then who wants fancy bathrooms/doorhandles/wardrobe shelves etc on your morgage, when changes are you are likely to change it at least once before your morgage is paid off anyway.

Sophia.....can't remember if it was you or not, but remember reading about a straw bale house in CC.....OH would really like to have a look round if possible. Not that we can afford to build a straw bale house, but after watching Grand Designs on monday, he has got the idea in his head that one day he will build himself a little straw bale office in the garden....not sure where he will find the time, but he did a very good job on our garage conversion back in UK so he might surprise me :)

That's the one :nice1 Just rre-read it and love the idea of recycled doors.....we have been thinking about how much of the finishing work we could do ourselves to keep costs down.

Don't know exactly when he will be down next as still busy with work and sorting out with his boss for timing of our move....things are in the pipelines, but the waiting is frustrating.
