I am waiting for my ITA to come through but I want to complete it asap. I am going to contact my previous employers about getting a letter of reference from them but i don't know what the immigration authorities will want. I presume it will just be that i worked there for the times that i put on my EOI.
Can someone advice?

Make sure that they use headed paper and that it clearly states that you were full time or the hours you worked (as well as your start and end dates/role etc).
Best of luck.

The agent we used gave me a kinda check list for the reference letter, it went something like this.
Headed paper, signed by a manger who clearly states their position.
Needs to state job title and if that isn't clearly relevant to points claimed a brief explanation how it relates. (NZIS workers aren't experts in all jobs so make it clear for them for example I claimed points as a social worker but my job titles were 'community care manager' and 'community care worker' so a very brief description of job role helped clarify that it was relevant.)
Needs to have number of hrs worked per week.
Start and finish date written as month and yr.
They do not need to know if you were good at your job, liked, how much you were paid, what extra roles and responsibilities you had, (unless needed to the clarity point above).
Hope this helps Debbie

NZIS complained that the letter I sent had a 'scanned' signature on it.
I had to go back to employer and get one with a 'real' signature before they would accept it.

I didn't use any "references" as such. I used:
Employment offer for NZ.
Job descriptions of previous roles either personal of from compnay internet site.
An annual performance review.
Contract offers (lots of 3 monthly renewals).
Pay slips - start and end.
Annual salary award letters (confirming length of service as an employee).
All on original headed paper in 99% cases.
It obviously worked as I have PR:-)
