Hi

Just a general query re flights. Was just checking out the cost of one way flights for early next year - prices approx 4K
Then looked at return flights - prices approx 5K

We only need a one way flight - but has anyone had any experience of booking a return flight with a view to using it as a trip back to the UK?

If so can it be open-ended? Or do you need a return date, if so how far in advance can that be? Would it be worthwhile?

Thanx

We used one way but it depends on your visa type you have as to which ticket you can get. We had PR, so no probs with a one way.

As for open ended you would have to check the airline websites to see the ticket type and availability. There are so many different options it is purely down to personal choice - and bank balance!! Best to check with the airlines or wait til one of our more enlightened members replies :exit

We tried several different airlines and found that your return date has to be within approx 360 days of the date on which you book (Not the date on which you fly out) I'm pretty sure you can later postpone the return date but don't know by how long or how often.
A ticket with flexible dates is usually dearer. One of the booking companies e.g. dial a flight or travel bug would probably give you further and more accurate information.

I'm assuming the £4K one-way is for all of you - either that or you are going first class:D

We are going in January and I had been looking at one-way flights costing around £640 from LHR to AKL (with Korean Airlines using OPODO),

Our plans have changed and we are now going via Sri Lanka to go to a wedding on the way. The travel agent has suggested waiting until after July 1st to book the flights as he expects Sri Lankan Airways to release their cheaper flights then.

You could check with your travel agent to see if other airlines have similar processes.

I did this when I came to NZ last year. I booked a flexible return with Air NZ. As babscat said, the return date had to be within a year of booking the ticket, but can be changed for about NZ$50.

In retrospect, though, I wish I hadn't done this as the logistics of trying to sort out returns from the UK to NZ and back again are difficult when you're in NZ (it's possible, but I found it a pain). In the end I gave up trying to get another return from the UK, and bought a one-way ticket instead and from now on will be booking my flights back to the UK from NZ.
