Hello
I'm applying for an account with ASB and some points need clarifying please.
The declaration of new zealand tax status bit on the forms confuses me. I am going out on a work visa so I am wondering which boxes to tick and what to do with the duducted levy bit on the forms? A or B?
here is the form to download to see what im on about
http://www.asb.co.nz/story10834.asp?
Thanks in advance
Andy

How long are you planning on being in NZ for?
You’re a New Zealand tax resident if:
• you’re in New Zealand for more than 183 days in any 12-month
period
And once you become tax resident then you become liable to NZ tax from the day that you arrived.
So, if you are going to remain in NZ for more than 183 days, then you should tick the 'resident' option so that the bank can take the correct amount of tax off you.
Note: Tax residency has nothing to do with your visa status.

I agree with Ian. Get an IRD no. as soon as you can, that way the tax on your interest is deducted at the right rate (you nominate the rate, btw).

ah thanks guys! I thought it was visa related hence my confusion!
I'll send off for my IRD number as soon as I get my visa through!
Thanks

Hi Andy,
In order to get your IRD number now, you actually have to have a job offer, (not sure what type of visa you are going for, so apologies if you already know this!).
I also have an account with ASB, (got a great service on arrival, they sorted me out in the branch with cards etc.. and setup online banking).
I completed my IRD application last month, once I had found a job here in Christchurch, and my employer held off on paying me until I had my IRD so I could avoid the whole Emergency Tax issue which I was greatful for.
Cheers, Dave

... apologies for the numpty question (it's Friday after all) but what is an IRD number... I'm guessing it's the equivalent of the UK's National Insurance Number.
Thanks :nice1

It doubles as an NI no, as well, though. It is the one number that all govt depts can use to identify you.

Hi Andy,
Yep - you will need your Visa and proof of job offer to get your IRD number, I popped into my local PostShop and completed the form, and gave them copies of my visa attached to passport and job offer from employer. They had to see the originals at the same time aswell. IRD number arrived in the post about a week later.

Thats weird I got an IRD number without showing them any kind of job offer, is that because I've got PR rather than being on a work visa?
Also how come kids can have IRD numbers (e.g. for opening Kiwisaver account)... they don't have jobs?
Oh the joys of trying to understand a whole other countries tax system!:uhoh

Hi Anneliese,
The system changed in February from what I gather, with regards to children, the applicant has to provide their IRD number and add the children to their application. (I think, from what I read).

As a person who has been in NZ exactly one week I have also had to get an IRD number and although I have a work Visa, I do not have a job offer. If you go to an AA office, (Automobile Association, not Alcoholics Anonymous) :laugh you can actually apply for your IRD number there. You need two pieces of ID, one is your Passport with your work visa and the other is a piece of NZ ID. I didn't have any NZ ID so yesterday I sat my theory NZ driving test and passed so they then used that as my NZ ID. You will need photocopies of the picture ID in your Passport, plus the work visa from your Passport and a photocopy of your NZ ID, (mine was the temporary NZ driving licence.) The AA will fax the IRD form off to the IRD and you will receive your IRD number within 48 hours.
The AA have the forms to apply for your IRD number and it costs $10 for them to fax it off for you. You can send the form in by mail if you want to, but it takes longer to get your IRD number if you do that.
My OH has a Contract of Employment so he was able to use his Passport and the COE instead of NZ ID. As you also have a job offer, you should be able to use that. I only wrote my scenario to let others know that you can actually get an IRD without a job offer.
Good Luck
:cheers Mazzie

Did you not have an overseas driving license already?
The requirements have been recently changed to allow them as well
International Drivers' Permit (issued by a member country of the UN Convention on Road Traffic)
Overseas Drivers' Licence (accompanied by an English translation completed by an LTNZ authorised translator, if not already in English)

Thanks Mazzie! I would never have thought about going into the AA to get one.

We got IRD numbers with tourist visas in late February of this year.
We walked into the local tax office (Napier) showed our passports and filled out a form. It was totally free and there were no questions asked, regarding our right to work/residence etc.
We returned the next day and were issued temporary cards displaying our numbers and a few days later our cards arrived in the post.
I’ll just add that we had PR approved prior to actually starting work, but at the time we didn’t have jobs and PR had actually just been rejected.
