Hi,

I wondered if anyone could advise on what the weather in Wellington is like? Hubby and I both like the sound of Wellington and think that as an area it would suit us and the children very nicely. One concern that we do have is the weather though, it it like the UK?

Our descision is not based solely on the weather but it would be nice to have some idea.

Many Thanks

Lynn

Over the past few days I have been comparing the weather in Wellington with my friend in Birmingham and we could both say that it was cold, wet and windy!

In the last 2 years the weather has been better than anything I can recall from the UK. More sunny days, some trees flowering twice, etc.

On the other hand when we have had the odd bad day, it has been windier, wetter, etc.

I have yet to wear the heavy jackets we brought with us from the UK.

Overall you won't be disappointed.

Yep I have to agree - while it has moments of terrible weather, Wellington overall has excellent weather, I lost count this summer of the number of fabulous days we had.

The wind can get up, but it happens so rarely that you live with it

Coming from someone who can't stand the cold & grey days I am very happy with thee weather so far. Summer has been endless, Autumn I never saw as we were still going to the beach & didn't see much change really, I suppose it must have got cooler & the winter so far (OK I know it's early on) has been great, we've had so many sunny days that the odd day in between when it rains you forget, of course this may change as winter goes on. It often looks colder outside than it really is & is often colder in my house at night & early morning than it probably is outside.
My In laws who are from west Wales have just left saying If this is winter then great & comparing the days here with those of Cardiff at the same time they were the same in temperature & rain, but it's summer in the UK :laugh
I was really worried & said all along if it's too cold we're moving to Auckland but so far so great :clap :raebanana

Definately nicer weather & as others had said Autumn is not like Autumn in the UK. Been further up the coast from Wellington you tend to get less wind & a degree or two warmer on many days. Weekend before last we were down the beach in t shirts & its winter :nice1:D

Hello

I am just over two years in Wellington and last year has been great.
As an example, I walk to the office in the morning and in 2008 so far only been in the bus 12 times.
In general, winter is OK with clear days and around 8 -12 degrees but with a southerly wind it feels much colder. In spring it will het warmer but also quiet windy in Wellingon.

Wellington is a small city (city only 170000 people) and greater Wellngton area 370000 so easy to get around and a lot to do.

Cheers

Marco

Anyone fancy trying south west scotland at the moment ?? (Lockerbie) Hovering around 12 - 14 degrees, blowin a flippin gale, and rain, rain and some more rain... Oh, yes..... erm welcome to our summer!

When's the next flight to NZ??? :exit

Just have to wait a bit longer for the Visas (we hope) and the house to sell (we pray!)

Only had a few grey 'Manchester Weather' days in the past couple of months, and it is winter!

One odd thing here, it can be bitterly cold first thing in the morning (think down-filled coat, scarf, hat & gloves), then by lunchtime it is warm enough to walk out for lunch without even a jacket on! By evening it starts cooling off again, but it's like having 3 seasons all in one day! The trick is definately to dress in layers!!!

Yep, I'd go along with that.

For me, the big difference in Wellington is the sun.

In the first 10 days of June, Wellington had more sun than anywhere in the UK during the 31 days of December 2007.
On average, winter here is about twice as sunny as in the UK. That makes a big difference!

Also, the sun is a lot, lot stronger. It's hard to imagine until you are here. But on a winter day, if it is clear then you will feel the sun for sure. In summer it does get quite extreme.

I would have to agree, theres been the odd nasty day (today for example!) but generally the weather has been pretty sunny and blue skies most days, 100% better than the old London Winters where you never saw anything but grey skies and cloud all winter.
I done a couple of outside jobs this week and all in t-shirts.

Would also have to agree with the cold mornings too, i usually struggle getting myself off to work as its so darn cold, wooly hat and scarf and van heater on maximum! But by about 11.00 i am in just a t-shirt with the van window down a little :)

I am jealous not to get Snow here though, as i still love a good snowfall!

Today is not a good day to ask really! but generally the weather is better. My parents rang the other night and were asking about the temperature. I told them it was sunny and 15C. It was raining and only 13C in Dublin and it's summer there!

I think that says a lot really. The winter here is definitely milder although we have had a good few what I call "Irish days" in the last week where it's lashed rain.

sounds great in winter (especially for a canadian!)......how hot and/or humid can it get in the summer? Does anyone need air conditioning? Would you need it in Kapiti?

Wellington doesn't generally get too hot, summers are mostly 20-25 degrees centigrade.

It doesn't get too humid either, so you can certainly live without air conditioning even up in Kapiti.

The one thing you will need though are good sunglasses.

I think it's been raining for about 24 hours now... :laugh

But I certainly wouldn't swap it anytime soon for the Midwest!

Call me a weather geek (well i do have one those outdoor weather stations) and its rained 62mm in past 14hrs ! And no sign of letting up yet, although pressure is rising fast, so i would expect it to stop in next 3-4 hours.. :)

its been miserable the last couple of days, but i love it! especially as i've had a rough couple of weeks and i've just been sitting inside drinking mugs of (barrys!) tea. my partner does too, though its ingrained in him as an irishman to be slightly more tolerant of rain lol.

i do hope its raining in the places where we need it to though...

the weather in general has been amazing though, considering the time of year. just the other night it was very mild (comparatively) and the days generally have had blue skies..ive not had to wear more than 3 layers (long sleeved cotton top, a tshirt over top and a light fleece for example) and even thats too much on some days.
