Hi
I have been following this forum for a long time because even though I am only 16 and some people may say I am too youn to make a big decision, I am not happy living in England with all the crime and rubbish weather and would really like to Emigrate to New Zealand or Australia! (Preferably NZ)
Anyway, I am currently completing A-Levels in UK in French and Re and General Studies, and even though I don't really want to do a degree, I think it will be easier to getin into NZ in the future if i have one! What do you think?
So at Uni, I am thinking of either doing a RE Degree, French and Spanish Degree, Air Transport Management Degree or a Accountancy Degree. What do you think would be the best degree to do to get a job offer in NZ?
Finally, a bit of topic from the first part of this post, I am just wondering what areas in NZ (towns no bigger than Manchester) are near to the beach etc but walmer than UK??
Many Thanks
Ben

Anyway im sure I will be on with a few questions, many of them pretty silly.

Hello, and welcome to the forum :)
Never too early to start planning for your future - at least that's what they told me when I started paying into a pension at 21 :laugh
On a more serious note, a degree will definitely help when applying for residency. As regards to which degree to follow, I would consider first what career you wish to pursue and take your lead from that.
Good luck.

Hello and welcome to you both.
Ben, if you decide to go to university youmight consider the possiblity of a working holiday in NZ, that way yuou could check the place out for a couple of months, see some of the country and so on.

hello and welcome! I thought i was young at 24 but it turns out not haha! A degree would help your position greatly as you have no other experience.

Well according to census data there are no cities in NZ that are bigger than Manchester, even Auckland has less people (452,000 compared to 404,000).
So, any town or city meets your first requirement.

Hi Ben.
If you look at the shortage lists and see something you would like to do. I would attempt to get into a New Zealand University to gain your degree there. That would give you time to see if you like it here and also give you more points when you apply for residency.
You're not too young. I started looking into it when I was 22 and am now heading out in a week to pursue a Veterinary degree.

Welcome to the forum! So you are a racing fan then? Not another Frankie follower i hope!! :laugh
Seriously is it the stockcars you are coming out to watch? If it is and you are an F1 stockcar fan in the Uk - just incase you haven't made the connection - I'm Kev Smith 64's wife! If you are coming out in Jan send me a Pm and we will arrange to meet up - make sure you try and stay long nough to see the teams champs!
Sorry no help with degrees - not got one - so can't offer advice! ;)

Do go to University, I had the best time ever at Uni, oh yeah and I managed to get a degree at some point also! :laugh Which Uni will you go to?
I would also check out:
www.bunac.org/uk/
OZ and NZ are great for gap years or the year after you finish Uni. The others you can actually do in the long holidays while at Uni. Most universities have a BUNAC club, where you can meet other people interested in doing this.
I have no idea about the air transport management course, I think you would want to enquire about the amount of jobs it could offer you in general. In other words do all the people coming out of Uni end up chasing the same few jobs or are there lots of possible career choices?
Accounting is a good career choice and has the potential to earn well. So probably the one I would choose.
French and Spanish, will open up a whole other world of possibilities, but are not so widely used in NZ/OZ. Japanese may be more useful for this side of the world.
Whatever you choose I would find out about getting work experience in the UK before you go. Maybe work placements in your holidays? This will increase your chances of getting a job offer. Another avenue to consider is looking for firms that have offices in both the UK and OZ/NZ, you may be able to start in a graduate position in the UK, then transfer to the other office at a later date.
IT, is another area which is worth considering as its skills are in demand worldwide.
You could look at the skills shortage lists on the immigration sites to see what areas are currently in demand. This will increase your chances of a successful visa application as you will get more points for an 'in demand' job. Do keep in mind that these lists can change.
Personally I would look at BUNAC, and take advantage of all the working holiday visas on offer, to check out a few places in the world. Then once you have a favourite, look into getting a more permanent visa.
Cheers
Tia

I went to Uni and had a bit too much of a great time. Hence no degree or any other useful qualifications at all.
Wouldn't change a thing though, would totally recommend doing the Uni thing.

Defo get a degree, you will never regret it. As to the subject, follow your heart and do something that you feel passionate about - you'll be a long time working.
Good luck to both of the newbies
