I will be moving to Auckland for a 2 year rotation with my company. The office is located downtown Auckland. I will be spending approx. 50-60% of my time working in the office and the rest of the time will be spent at client sites. I will be moving with my girlfriend and she is hoping to find a job as a teacher in a primary school.
We are looking for a place to live in a nice area with not too long of a commute to the city (30 mins or so). We love the beach and outdoor activities. Ideally the area would have a good school system for my girlfriend to work. The North Shore area in general seems nice. Any suggestions?

Are the company supplying an expat package i.e. paying or contributing to housing etc? That would certainly affect my response not sure on others.

The company is putting me up in a hotel for the first 2 weeks until I find a place to live. After that, it is all up to the two of us to pay.

It depends on how much you are earning as to where you can afford but Devonport is nice and quite a lot of primary schools nearby. It takes 15 mins on the ferry into the city centre and there are some decent places available to rent at the moment.

I find East Auckland very convenient, and full of really good primary schools, I'm talking about Howick, Pigeon Mountain, Bucklands Beach, Farm Cove, Sunnyhills, etc. Takes 40min by bus to get to CBD. I looked at the North Shore, but I was a bit put off by the one bridge in and out. Also I don't drive (yet) so somewhere on a very easy bus route was a must.

I saw that, due to low crime and good road safety. Although you may find things get a lot more 'unsafe' now I am learning to drive! :p
Cheers
