Well with medicals in mind in the future hopefully, I've had the scales and tape measure out!

My BMI is 25.5 according to the calculator but my waist is more than 88cm :uhoh

Does this mean I'd get rejected on waist size? My hubby has to lose weight and waist size, so I suppose I could join him in dieting, but i am blaming my 3 kids for the jelly belly!!

you might have to have the additional blood tests with that waist measurement (fasting lipids and fasting glucose tests.) which is better to arrange to have done at the medical with the other blood tests, saves you going back again for additional blood tests.

but if you can get your waist measument down you could skip the additional tests and make life a lot easier for yourself :)

Yup. I can get it down only just over, so will need to cut down on my weekend wine and buy a hula hoop! Oh well, it's good support for hubby if I cut down too I suppose!!

Thanks again

I panicked with mine. Sometimes when I measured it was 91cms, other times 87cms. On the day I was desperate for the loo and told the doctor this - he measured twice and even pulled the tape tighter - he made it 83cms so I passed . If you are just over you might get away with it - I did.

being a bit ignorant here - what is the measurement supposed to be under? and what happens if not? is it same measurement for ladies and men? (surely not??)

also is this for medicals in UK ? does anyone know if same applies if you have the medical done in NZ?

I think I'd have to breath in a lot to get 85cm :o

My doctor told me to suck it in because I was close and my BMI was 24.5. He made my waist just small enough. :)

Here are the instructions about BMI and waist measurement (for ANYWHERE it's done), from the form NZIS 1007 that the doctor has to complete.

In light weight clothing and stockinged feet:
If BMI > 30, or waist circumference of females ≥ 88cm of males ≥
102cm, please arrange and attach fasting lipids and fasting glucose
tests.

I think I'd better hide the biscuits and get running up and down stairs a bit :p

None of us were measured round the waist, not me, OH or 12 yr old daughter.

You may be correct that the test is the same no matter where it is done, but
it is different depending on your race!

As this is a global forum, it's only right to point out that the waist measurement used are:-

> men ≥ 102cm, except Asian / Indian men ≥ 90cm
> women ≥ 88cm, except Asian / Indian women ≥ 80cm.

Ah, I've seen that mentioned before on the forum, but that which I have copied is exactly what it says on that particular form.

Yep, the form is only for us, I take the real information from the medical examiners guide which is what the doctors use.

BTW, this is also on the immigration website if you want to read it.
